“Because I’m hot?” She held back her laugh. Drunk Finn was adorable and open. The walls he’d had up were gone.

“Nahhh, because my body seems to remember you, but up here—” He tapped his head. “Up here you scare me.”

“Why do I scare you, Finn?”

“I don’t know.”

She stared at his glazed eyes a moment longer and then grabbed his hand. “Let’s get you to bed.”

He leaned on her but managed to walk up the stairs. “I don’t feel so good.” He groaned.

Shit. Charli opened the door to the bathroom and led him over to the toilet just in time as he threw up the food she’d just made him. “Feel better?”

“A little.”

She flushed and wiped his mouth with a towel. “Come on.”

He got to his feet and she handed him a cup full of mouthwash. He swished and spat as she tossed the dirty towel into the washer. Taking his hand, she led him into the bedroom and pulled back the sheets on his side.

She lifted the hem of his shirt, and he helped her the rest of the way, leaving it in a pile on the floor. The moon reflected off the dark toned muscles of his body. She swallowed. Being so close to him, touching him like this and knowing she couldn’t have him was pure torture.

She reached for the button on his jeans.

“Whoa, now. This is moving a little fast. Don’t you think?” He chuckled. And he sounded just like old Finn, except that tinge of apprehension in his voice.

“I’m just putting you to bed.” She pulled them down his muscular thighs, over his legs, and then he stepped out of the pants, leaving him in his black boxer briefs.

She guided him to the bed.

He lay down with a sigh. “It smells like you in here.”

“Is that a good thing . . .? Finn?”

Light snores were her only answer.

Okay, then. She slipped out of her clothes and into an old T-shirt of his with a pair of panties. Charli climbed into bed, wanting some semblance of normalcy. She craved to be held in his arms. Pulling his hand up towards the pillows, she snuggled against his bare chest. Closing her eyes, she breathed him in. Even with the booze and mint from the mouthwash, traces of his scent were there bringing her warmth and comfort. She held on to him in the darkness, because when the dawn came, her Finn would be gone once again. At least in the night she could pretend everything was back to the way it used to be.

Early morning light filtered through the windowpane. Stifling, Charli kicked off the covers on her feet. The hot, hard body behind her was like a furnace. Finn’s arms were wrapped tightly around her, one hand on her breast and his hardness poking her backside. A smile curled the edges of her mouth. She’d love nothing better than to stay like this until he woke up, but unfortunately nature called. Holding on for another minute longer, she savored the moment before she slipped out of his hold and tiptoed to the bathroom. He would wake up with one hell of a hangover.

She relieved herself and stripped naked before walking into the shower. The hot water rained over her body, relaxing her muscles. She and Finn needed to talk once he had some coffee and food in his belly. He couldn’t just disappear like that again and stay out at all hours without calling her to let her know. She was his wife.

After shutting off the water, she reached for her towel, but the hook was empty. She opened the cupboard and it too was void of anything she could dry off with. “Damn it.”

The fresh basket of clothes was in the bedroom, waiting to be folded. She scurried out of the bathroom and opened the bedroom door, finding exactly what she was looking for. Picking up the blue towel, she dried off her hair first before wiping the droplets from her skin. After wrapping it around herself, she looked up. Finn’s heated gaze locked on to hers. She knew that look. He wanted her.

She padded over to the bed and sat on the edge by his chest. “You okay?”

“Why am I here in the bed? Did we . . .?” Finn stared at her hand holding the towel together.

“No, we didn’t have sex. You were drunk. You threw up in the bathroom, and then I brought you in here to sleep it off. You don’t remember?”

His brow furrowed. “Bits and pieces.”

“Do you have a headache?”

“Yeah.” His voice was still gravelly with sleep.
