Vargas ran over towards the perpetrator, who was trying to scramble to his feet. She drew her gun, ordering him to stay down with his hands on his head.

“What the hell is going on? I didn’t do anything!” he yelled.

“Fine!” Finn yelled. Bently got off him, keeping a wary eye on her husband. Finn’s gaze was hard and dangerous as he got up, his chest heaving. He faced Charli. “He won’t hurt you again.”

She nodded. Air rushed from her chest as weight she hadn’t known she’d been carrying slipped from her shoulders. Her body sagged in relief, and her knees went weak. Finn was beside her in an instant. His arms wrapped protectively around her. Tucking her head to his chest, he led her back to the office. Her chest tightened, her lungs squeezing tight.

I’m okay. I’m safe. The baby’s safe. They got him!

“I’ll need to call you after we get things straightened up at the station,” Bently said from the doorway.

“Thank you, Bently,” Charli said.

“Of course. I promised we’d get him.”

She closed her eyes and leaned against Finn. “I want to go home.”

Finn brushed a lock of hair away from her face and kissed her. A sense of calm washed over her with his touch. “I got you, Charli-baby. No one is gonna hurt you on my watch.”

His promise brought her comfort. She stood on shaky legs, his arm supporting her. They’d actually caught the bastard. Her mind was still reeling. Now she only had one man to worry about.

She’d have to trust Finn and believe the promises he’d made and hope he could be the man they both needed.

Finn

Finn’s eyes fluttered open. Bright rays of sunshine shone over Charli’s body pressed against his so perfectly—like she was made for him. A few grey steaks glittered from the reflection in her otherwise coal-black hair. He took his time, his gaze roaming over her features. Dark eyelashes and a button nose. The urge to kiss every single light freckle smattered over her cheeks rose within him like a tidal wave. Her mouth parted, those honey-tinged lips calling to him. A small scar tucked underneath her chin on her otherwise pure complexion. How did she get that? There was so much about Charli that was new to him, and still he wanted to know everything there was to know about her. She swallowed, her long slender neck bobbing, drawing his attention down farther still to the rise and fall of her breasts. The sheet covered the rest of her, but the image of her naked was burned into his brain.

He’d actually slept pretty well last night for the first time since he’d been back. After the adrenaline had worn off, they’d both crashed in each other’s arms. He leaned in and kissed her temple. She wrinkled her nose before she smiled. Her eyes fluttered open, her whiskey gaze focusing on him.

“Good morning, beautiful.”

“It sure is. I thought last night . . . you . . . everything was a dream.” A frown creased her brow.

He pressed his lips to her nose and then her mouth. “I promise, it’s all real. I’m right here.” And I’m not going anywhere.

She relaxed and snuggled into him, kissing his naked chest. “I like waking up with you.”

“Me too.”

“Oh, I can tell.” She giggled, pressing against his morning wood.

He groaned. “I have some errands to run this morning.” He nipped her shoulder. “But before our shift, I’d like to take you out to lunch.” Finn nuzzled his nose against her neck before kissing under her chin. He couldn’t get enough of her, wanted to leave his mark all over her. Christ, when had he become so territorial?

“I’d like that,” she answered.

He pulled back enough to look at her. She gave him a dreamy smile.

“Stay here. I’ll be back to pick you up. We can run by the station to give Bently what he needs, and then I’m gonna feed you.” He gave her another kiss on her mouth before rolling out of bed.

Finn got dressed and took one more parting look over his shoulder. Charli’s eyes locked on to him with a mixture of desire and joy. He’d do whatever he could to keep that expression on her beautiful face. He gave her a wink and left the room.

Twenty minutes later, Finn sipped his coffee he’d picked up from the Stardust Café. Running into Remy had been a surprise. She’d grown up and married Mikel of all people. He shook his head in disbelief and stepped into the line at the pharmacy.

“Finn?”
