He turned around, his jaw dropping. Laura, his ex, stood with a hesitant smile on her face. Her dirty blonde hair was swept up into a bun. Pink colored her cheeks. Her blue eyes sparkled, matching the scarf with some fancy designer logo printed on it. She was older, but somehow more beautiful than he remembered her. His heart squeezed. The feelings he’d had for her were still fresh. Something unfinished lingered between them, but he had a feeling it was due to the fact that to him no time had passed. “Laura?”

Her smile widened. “I’d heard you were in an accident and forgot everything.”

He swallowed. “Just everything since I was seventeen. I remember you. How have you been?”

She bit her lip and batted her eyelashes at him. “Pretty good. How about you?”

“It’s been . . . challenging. But better now.”

Laura looked over her shoulder before she leaned in and said, “I’d love to catch up sometime for old times’ sake. There’re some things . . . I’d really like to talk to you about.”

Finn nodded. Like about what happened between us? “Okay.”

She grinned and pulled out her phone. “What’s your number?”

He rattled off the numbers and then his phone dinged.

“There. Now you have my number and my address too. In case you have some free time. I work from home, so I’m usually around.” She tucked her phone back into the large purse hanging from her arm.

“Maybe I’ll stop by.”

“I hope you do.” She licked her lips. “Well, I’d better go. Have a good day.”

“You too.” He waited until she’d disappeared down the aisle before he turned away.

“Can I help you, sir?” the pharmacy tech asked.

“Picking up prescriptions for Finn Reed. There should be three.”

He pulled out his phone, clicking on Laura’s message before adding her to his contacts. Nerves skated across his chest, his belly twisting. Maybe talking to Laura could help him piece together more of his past. Maybe it would help him be more at peace with his present.

“This new one has some additional side effects to be aware of, so make sure to read the inserts.”

“Mm-hmm.” Finn nodded, half paying attention.

He paid for his meds and jogged back to his car. After popping the lid on the one his doctor said would help level out his moods, he washed the pill down with his warm coffee.

Shifting the car into gear, he headed home. The thought of telling Charli about his run-in with Laura was fleeting. What did it matter? He hadn’t done anything wrong. And Charli was just beginning to trust him. There was no need to rock the boat.

They’d been forced to see that fucker, Phillip Feller, through the glass today when Charli picked him out of the lineup. After they’d squared things away at Bently’s office, Finn drove them to get lunch, the events of last night still very fresh in his mind.

He opened the door to the diner for Charli and entered behind her. The blue and white tables were another familiar sight. He’d spent countless days here eating and joking around with his friends. His first date with Laura had been here. Damn. He needed to focus on the woman he was with, his wife.

“Do you want to sit in a booth?” Charli asked.

“Sure.” He placed his hand on the small of her back and led her to an empty one in the corner.

She angled in, her belly close to the tabletop.

“Are you okay here?” He pulled out a menu from the basket behind the condiments.

“Yes. Still have room.” She smiled.

A woman came over, setting two bundles of silverware in front of them before pulling out her notepad. “Good afternoon.”

“Hey, Brynn. You remember Finn?”
