“Isn’t this cute?” Charli held up a knitted grey sweater with a baby bear on the front that looked like it was made for a doll. It seemed way too tiny for a human.

“Is it for an old man or a baby?”

She chuckled. “Babies do kind of look like old men with their bald heads and wrinkles.”

He picked up a white, long shirt-type thing with buttons on the bottom. The writing on the shirt said My dad is the best! “How about this one?”

She studied the shirt and shook her head. “I think we can do better. How about this onesie?” This time she held up a camouflage one that said Soldier in training.

Finn squinted. He might be retired from the Army, but he didn’t think of himself as a soldier. He had no memories of any time spent serving. Just scars and a metal plate on his skull. And the nightmare.

She must have sensed his turmoil because she hung it back up and picked another. “Maybe this one would be better.” The onesie was navy blue with a wrench and hammer. It said Daddy’s sidekick.

He smiled. “Yeah, I like that one.”

She picked out a few more outfits and slipped them into the cart.

“Is he really gonna be that small?” he asked.

A hesitant smile tipped the corner of her mouth. “Yes. He will be little and vulnerable, relying on us for his every need.” The clothing trembled in her hand.

He reached out, grasping his fingers around hers. The journal entry had at least given him insight into why she was scared, even though it was vague. “You’re going to be a great mother.”

Her eyes widened. “How do you know?”

He traced his thumb over her wrist, gently rubbing it in circles. “Because you’re so patient. And kind. I can tell by the way you hold your belly, like you’re trying to soothe him and let him know you’re there even when he’s safe inside you.”

Her lashes fluttered closed.

He pressed his hand to the side of her cheek, tipping her face up to look at him. “I know because everything I learn about you tells me one thing. You are the most capable and brave woman I’ve ever known.”

She blinked her glassy eyes, gratitude glowing back at him. She leaned in, pressing her soft lips to his. This kiss was dipped in affection and rimmed in hope. And when she pulled away, something that looked a lot like his future stared back at him.

“Have we ever done it in a department store?” Finn asked.

Charli snorted before she laughed. She was fucking adorable.

Her eyes lit up mischievously as she sucked in her bottom lip. “The changing room in the men’s section is usually less busy.”

His stomach flipped and tipped as if he were at sea. Finn’s cock pulsed at the idea. “Are you serious?”

She leaned in and whispered, “Only if you promise to do very bad things to me.”

He’d have thrown her over his shoulder if he wasn’t afraid of hurting the baby. Instead, he grabbed her hand, abandoning their cart. He pulled her towards the sign for the men’s section as she giggled behind him.

“What about our stuff?”

“It will be there when we get back.” Or they could go grab it all again. He didn’t care about anything but the fact that he was going to explode if he didn’t get this woman alone in the next few seconds.

Finn looked over his shoulder. In between the rows of clothing, a few people milled about, their attention everywhere but them. He led Charli into the room, pushing her through the first open door to the changing stall. Flicking the lock, he spun around. Charli’s chest was rising and falling almost as rapidly as his. The lights and the three-sided mirrors showed him so many delicious angles of her at once. He traced his hand over her collarbone. She was wearing some sort of loose-fitting sweater over leggings. His lips replaced his fingers.

Charli gripped his head. “Finn?”

He hooked his thumbs into the elastic waistline of her pants and pulled them down her legs. “Step out of these so I can fulfill your conditions.”

She followed his request, and her obedience sent a thrilling bolt of lust through him.

“You’re not wearing any panties?” he asked hoarsely.
