You said I was your true north, and if you ever got lost, this would help you find your way back to me. Charli’s words echoed in his mind.

If only it was true. If only the ink in their skin had some magical ability to bring his memories back.

If only he’d never woken at all.

Finn

The next morning, Finn lifted the phone, checking the address once more. 49 Seal Cove Lane. Laura’s house. He hung his helmet on the motorcycle and slipped the keys into his leather jacket. Taking a lungful of cold air, he walked across the crunchy leaves that had fallen towards her door. Nerves wound around him, twisting inside him.

He lifted his hand at the door and hesitated. Charli’s hurt expression flashed in his mind. I need to do this for us. Watching those videos had brought back memories. Maybe if he started from where he remembered with Laura, he’d recover the moments lost with Charli.

He rapped three times on the door and waited. His stomach flipped as he shifted from side to side on his feet. He hadn’t been this nervous since he’d asked Laura on a date.

The door opened, and Laura’s blue eyes met his, her lips twisting in a pleased smile. “Hey, stranger.”

“Howdy.” He cringed. Am I a fucking cowboy now? “I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d take you up on your offer to talk.”

Her eyes lit up. “Come on in.” She moved to the side to allow him to pass.

He squeezed by her in the small space.

“Can I take your jacket?”

“Sure.” He shrugged the coat off and handed it to her. She hung it on the coatrack behind the door.

“Let’s go sit in the living room. Would you like anything to drink?” Laura asked, leading the way. She wore a simple pair of dark-wash skinny jeans and an oversized sweater that hung off one shoulder. Her golden hair fell to her shoulders with curls that were not natural to her normally straight hair.

“Nah, I’m good.”

She motioned to the couch, and he took a seat. She joined him, her thigh touching his. He moved a little farther away.

“How have you been?” she asked.

“Good. Fine.”

One of her eyebrows rose as she tilted her head disbelieving.

“It’s been difficult getting . . . into the swing of things,” he confessed.

She reached her hand out, resting it on his knee. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I can’t imagine waking up having forgotten so much of my life. You’re a really strong man to conquered that and still try to make things work between you and Charli.”

He sighed. Maybe Laura understood him better than he realized.

“I was wondering if you could help me.” Finn turned his head to face her.

She squeezed the hand on his knee. “I’d do anything for you, Finny.” Her eyes shone with genuine care.

Did she still have feelings for him? Did she feel bad about cheating on him?

“I wondered if you could give me some closure.”

“How so?”

“Just, can you tell me what happened between us?” Maybe it will spur the memories I need back with Charli.

She stiffened, pulling her manicured hand to her lap. Her shoulders drooped. “Where do you want me to start?”
