“It might be . . .” Someone from my past. Someone I never thought I’d see again. “I don’t know.”

“Are they threatening?”

“Not really. I’m probably just being paranoid.” Charli dismissed the idea.

“I know you‘re working closely with the sheriff. Maybe it’s worth mentioning to him,” Brynn suggested.

“Yeah. I’ll do that. Thanks for . . . listening.”

“Anytime.”

“Have a good day off.”

“You too.” Brynn hung up.

The creak of the floorboard made Charli jump. She slammed a hand to her chest. “Finn?”

Her husband walked into the room, studying her with dark clouds in his eyes. “Who was that?”

She should tell him about the texts. But what if she worried him for no reason? He’d had an enormous amount of stress thrust on him already because of her situation. If Finn wanted any hope of recovering his memories, the less stress the better for his healing. No. She’d protect him from this. It wasn’t her attacker—he was in jail. And if it was Damon . . . well, that definitely would be too much for him to handle right now. Charli eyed the phone in her hand before returning her gaze to his face. “Brynn.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Hey, did you move the picture of us from my dresser?” She stood.

He shook his head.

“Are you sure?” She leaned over to check if it had fallen behind the dresser. Nope.

“I didn’t touch your stuff,” he said coldly.

“Okay. Never mind. I’m sure it will turn up at some point. You ready to go to Link’s bonfire?”

“Sure.”

She reached out and placed her hand on his chest—the first contact she’d had in days. He tensed under her fingertips. Lately she’d been going to bed without him, and he’d resumed sleeping on the couch. Because he’s afraid of hurting me again.

“I miss you, baby.” She leaned her cheek against his pec.

“I’m right here. I didn’t go anywhere.”

She turned her face to his. “You’re here. But you’re not here.” She tapped his temple.

His hand wound over hers, lowering it back to his chest.

“It was an accident. And no harm was done. Stop blaming yourself.” She leaned on tiptoes. Her hands wove behind his neck, pulling him down for a kiss.

Conflict flashed in his gaze. His lips flattened in a thin line.

“Please, Finn?”

At her plea, his gaze turned soft, dropping to her mouth. His lips crashed to hers, possessive and unrelenting. A surge of lust shot through her as his hands wrapped around her body, picking her up off the floor. She locked her legs around his waist, raking her teeth across his bottom lip, giving it right back to him. He groaned, squeezing her ass hard before he lowered her to the bed, settling his weight over her. His tongue dove into her mouth, taking, blurring, stirring her arousal to a peak. Finn’s intensity seemed desperate, like he needed to prove something. To her or himself, she wasn’t sure. Heat blanketed her every cell. He palmed one of her breasts, squeezing to the point of pain. Sweet agony. It only fed the fire wreaking havoc in her core. Molten lava spilled from her most secret places. He lowered his head to her chest, biting her nipple through the thin fabric of her blouse.

She moaned.

“Say my name,” Finn ordered.

“Finn.”
