He wished his father was still here, so he could talk to him about this situation with Emma. How could a woman feel so right when it was so wrong? His father would be able to make sense of it. His thumb hovered over his dad’s contact name on the screen of his phone. He couldn’t bring himself to close Solomon’s mobile account. Sometimes he just needed to hear that voice on the other end of the answering machine. His shoulders slumped as his phone vibrated in his hand.

Reese: Oh, wanted to give you a heads-up. Rachel’s back in town. Came by the shop looking for you.

Rachel? The only woman he’d ever loved. They’d lived together after college, but she’d gotten a job in Texas, and he couldn’t leave his father and the garage.

Link: She just visiting?

Reese: No idea. I told her you’d be back in a week.

Link: Thanks for letting me know.

Reese: No problem.

What was Rachel doing back in Shattered Cove? Did he want to see her? Her leaving had broken his heart, but he’d never wanted to hold her back from her dream job.

He sighed in frustration. He had enough to deal with without adding his ex to the mix. Nothing had made sense since his dad died. Fuck. He’s dead. It still didn’t feel real. He needed a distraction. Something to take his attention away from the fact that everything was spinning out of control in his life.

Link took a gulp of his warm beer, his eyes flicking to the digital clock.

Where the hell is Emma? She had left him to “run a few errands” hours ago. Maybe she was discovered and got hurt? Anxiety snaked in his belly.

A woman brushed against him as she took a seat on the stool beside him. Her sweet, musky perfume teased his senses. Her shoulder-length black hair came to the white silk blouse she wore, see-through enough to hint at her dark undergarments matching the short leather skirt that ended just before a peek of flesh between her garter and stockings.

“Like what you see?” Her voice was deep and sultry.

Link’s cock twitched. Damn, he needed to get that under control. Wait! Someone else was getting him excited for the first time in months besides Emma? He should be ecstatic. Maybe he had fucked her out of his system. His relief was quickly clouded by guilt. They hadn’t said anything about exclusivity during their tryst. And maybe he should end this with Emma before he got any deeper.

“Cat got your tongue?” she purred.

“Uh, sorry, I was just . . .”

“I have better uses for a mouth like that than talking anyways.” She kept her head angled away so that the dark hair covered her face, only hinting at her profile as she slipped a black and gold room key over the bar top.

“Penthouse suite. Ten grand for the night.”

His eyes widened as she stood, turning her back to him.

“I don’t—I’m sorry—I’m with someone.” Fuck. What was he doing? Was he turned on? Abso-fucking-lutely. But going with someone else besides Emma while they were doing whatever it was they were doing felt . . . wrong. Not to mention the fact that this woman was apparently a high-class prostitute. He’d never paid for sex before. Seemed his dick wanted a walk on the taboo side lately. Fuck my life.

She leaned over his shoulder and laid her hand on his thigh as she spoke in his ear with a sultry voice. “I don’t think she’d mind if you came with me.”

Her hand drifted over his cock straining beneath his jeans. Temptation curled up his spine as his dick throbbed with arousal.

It was one night. No one would know. His hand shot out, grasping her wrist and pulling it away. The familiar leather band made his breath catch as he turned to look at the face of his temptress. “Emma?”

“Not tonight. Tonight I’m just an expensive hooker, who goes by the name of Candy.” She winked.

He gripped a strand of raven hair.

“It’s a wig, so don’t pull too hard.” She smiled.

“What is this? Were you testing me?” His anger sparked.

She ran one red nail up his chest to his chin, tipping it towards her. Emma leaned in so that her lips barely brushed his as she explained, “This is called role play. It’s a chance for you to be whoever you want tonight. And I’m here to be whatever you need. Yours to do with as you please—anything you want. My safe word is poison.”

“Safe word? What the hell—?”

She silenced him with a kiss, dipping her tongue in his mouth. “Give me five minutes and then come on up.”
