Hold on just a little longer.

Go on a little farther.

Fight. Fight for the light.

Who am I really?

A shell, numb and hollow.

Darkness pulling me under.

Suffocating in the open.

Alone in a crowd.

Silent screams swallowed by a fake smile.

They tell me breathe. Just breathe.

When the flood comes and darkness reigns,

Hold on just a little longer.

Just a little farther.

Fight. Fight for the light.

Fight for you.

Fight for me.

Fight for your life.”

The crowd roared, phone lights waving. Asher, Leo, Nicky, and Ravi all stepped away from their instruments and surrounded her in a group hug. Link wanted to be out there. Instead, he cheered her on from the sidelines. He stuck his fingers into his mouth and gave a loud whistle. “That’s my girl!”

Her bandmates backed away before taking up their instruments once again. Emma’s cheeks were flushed and wet as tears of joy glittered under the lights. She gave him a wink before grasping the mic once again. “I’d love to thank the one person who’s been with me through it all. He’s followed through on his promises to hold me through my dark days and celebrate the good ones. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this man. Can you give my boyfriend, Link, a warm welcome?”

What? No. Link held up his hands and shook his head as she motioned for him to join her across the stage in front of tens of thousands of people.

“Come on. Don’t be shy,” she teased.

He sighed in resignation and stalked across the stage, pulled her into his arms, and gave her a kiss that made the flush on her cheeks deepen. If she wanted to put him on the spot, he’d give it right back to her.

Several catcalls and oohs and ahs came from the audience.

Emma’s eyes sparkled with mischief and adoration. “Link, I love you more than life itself.”

“I love you too, sweetheart. You could wait until after the show to tell me that though.” He chuckled.

She shook her head, tucking her hair behind her ear nervously. “I wanted an audience for when I told you that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you. I wanted them to know just how much of an amazing man you truly are—willing to give up everything so that I could fly. Lincoln Owusu, will you marry me?” She kneeled, holding his hands in hers as his heart raced in his chest.

What? She’s proposing?

“Say yes!”

“I’ll marry you!” someone from the crowd called.

He shook his head, and fear flashed in her eyes.
