“No.” She shook her head vehemently and winced. Her hand grasped the back of her neck. “Home. Sleep.”

Her head lolled to the side as her eyes fluttered closed.

“Shit. Okay. Hold on.” Mason slipped his hand under her arms and another beneath her knees before lifting her. “Aspen, open the door.”

His daughter listened, climbing out of his way. Mason slid Pippa into his passenger seat and buckled her in. “Climb in the back, A.”

Aspen did as he said, her worried gaze locked on Pippa.

He motioned for the dog to climb in. “Come on, girl.”

The dog jumped up, curling next to her human’s feet and laying her head on Pippa’s lap. Mason shut the door and pulled out his cell phone, dialing the one woman who might know what to do.

Charli picked up on the second ring. “Hey, Mase.”

“Hey, Charli. I need your help.”

“What’s up?” she asked as her baby giggled in the background.

“I saw you with a woman in the bar a while back. She works at the bookstore. She’s got colorful braids, about five feet one—“

“Oh, that’s Pippa.”

“Yeah. Does she have any family nearby?” he asked.

“Nope. She’s alone here. I think she has a sister in Boston.”

Damn. He couldn’t leave her by herself even if he knew where she lived. So what was he supposed to do?

“Well, could you maybe meet me at my house as soon as possible? I’ll explain when you get there.”

“Everything okay?” Charli asked worriedly.

“Hope so.”

“I’ll be right over,” she promised.

Mason hung up the phone and climbed in the driver’s side. He started the car, turning to check on Pippa. She was asleep, her full pink lips parted as a few tiny hairs at the edge of her hairline blew in the breeze from the open window. This woman had kept his daughter protected and now it was his turn to return the favor.

I’ll keep you safe.
