Pippa

Pippa rolled over and groaned. Why am I so sore? She blinked her eyes open. A ceiling fan drifted lazily above her, creating a soft breeze. She sat, the soft sheets falling to her lap. Navy-blue walls. How did I get here? And where was Lady? The last thing she remembered was watching a movie with Aspen and Mason. Then . . . warmth and feeling weightless.

She looked down at herself. Her fingers pinched the worn, soft cotton material. This wasn’t her shirt. She lifted the covers. Heat flushed her cheeks. Her pants were gone, and she was completely commando underneath the T-shirt. Why did he change my clothes? And where is my underwear?

The padding of footsteps brought her attention to the door. Mason walked in, wearing a pair of black sweatpants that hung low showing off his V intersected by a line of brown hair. Her mouth went dry. How could the grumpy man she’d met a few months ago be one and the same as this one?

He offered her the beverages in his hands. “Wasn’t sure if you felt like coffee or juice this morning?”

Pippa reached for the coffee. “Caffeine is always welcome.”

“Cream and sugar, just how you like.”

She took a sip and smiled. “Mmm. You know me so well.”

His brows drew together, and concern marred his expression. “How are you feeling?”

She took another sip of her drink and studied him. Why was he asking the dreaded question? “I’m fine.”

“Do you remember having a seizure last night?”

Pippa’s mouth dropped open. “No.” She set her coffee on the bedside table. So that was why she was so achy today . . . and half-naked.

“It was a tonic-clonic. I almost called an ambulance it went on so long.” He sat beside her, setting the juice on his nightstand. Mason reached out and brushed the hair out of her face, then tucked it behind her ear.

“I’m sorry. They’ve been happening a lot more frequently lately. Maybe I need to adjust my meds.” Had she peed on herself? Was that why she was changed? I’ve put off calling the doctor too long. It’s time to make an appointment.

“You have nothing to be sorry about. But I would feel better if you called your doctor and made an appointment.” He leaned against the headboard, echoing her thoughts. “I had to change you; don’t know if you remember that part. Your clothes should be dry by now.

Humiliation rose to her cheeks once again, and she covered her eyes. How mortifying.

Mason pulled her palms away. “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”

Easy for him to say. He’s not the adult who wet himself. “Is Lady with Aspen—oh, God!” Pippa covered her mouth. “I should go before she sees me in here.”

Mason smiled, placing his hand on her thigh. “Aspen already knows you spent the night here. She’s gone with my brother for the day. She’s gonna stay with them while I go on a job. I got a call for a last-minute security gig for a celebrity staying in Hampton. I’ll be gone for a week. But I’ll be home in time for her first day back at school.”

She knows?

Mason’s rough hand grasped the side of her face, turning her so she had nowhere to look but him. “I won’t hide a healthy adult relationship from her. Aspen needs to understand how they work.”

Pippa’s eyebrows drew up as a teasing smile curved the corners of her mouth. “Who said we were together? I said we were friends, taking this slow.”

He smirked and gently kissed her lips. His tongue caressed the seam of her mouth, gently prodding until she parted her lips to give him entrance. His kiss coaxed her alive, stirring need and igniting a fire of arousal inside her. She relaxed into his touch, her hand coming to rest on his chest, right above his beating heart which raced just as fast as hers.

He pulled away, locking his lust-soaked eyes with hers. “I like having you in my bed.”

“I could get used to it.” Her voice was all breath.

“I hope you do. I plan to keep you here as long as you’ll stay. Maybe forever.”

She swallowed. “You keep saying that word—forever.”

“Pippa, I thought I knew what love was. I thought I had it before. But now, I’m sure. I love you. Every piece of me is yours—body, heart, and soul. I belong to you.”

She sucked in a breath of air, thick with anticipation. “I think I love you like that too.”

Hope danced in his gemstone eyes. “Think? Well, I better make you sure.”
