Pippa unscrewed the cap and took a drink before she asked the man, “What happened?”

“You don’t remember?” Aspen asked.

A familiar frustration rose. She hated losing time like this. Not knowing chunks of her life was just one thing her generalized epilepsy stole from her. “The last thing I remember is taking a call in the bookstore. How did I get here?”

The man stood, reaching out his hand as if to shake hers. “I’m Mason Wright. We met before, but last time you woke up you didn’t remember me.”

She took his hand, electricity thrumming up her arm, sending warm tingles racing through her body.

She gasped, pulling her palm back. Was that another seizure coming on?

“You came into the café to get me because Aspen here had, uh, become a woman in your bookstore.” Mason rubbed the back of his head self-consciously.

“I did?”

He nodded. “You offered to help us get her the supplies she needed at the pharmacy, and while we were there, someone tried to rob the store.”

Pippa gasped, her eyebrows shooting up her forehead. “Dios mio.” No wonder she’d had an episode. That was a lot of stress.

“After, when we were outside, you had a seizure. I didn’t know what to do, so I brought you home and called Charli,” Mason finished.

“Wow.”

“I can take the dog out if you want to wait here for Charli; she should be down with your clothes soon. Unless you want to?” Mason asked.

She nodded and handed over the leash. “I would appreciate it.”

Lady went with him, turning back to look at Pippa once before she wagged her tail. Who knew how long she’d been asleep? Poor girl probably needed to do her business.

“Are you really okay?” Aspen’s timid voice asked.

Pippa turned to her and took a seat by her side. “Yeah. I have epilepsy and sometimes I get seizures.”

“That was really scary.”

Pippa nodded. “They can be.”

“Does it happen a lot?”

“Often enough, but usually I don’t get tonic-clonics. Sometimes when I’m under a lot of stress, this happens,” Pippa explained.

Aspen’s head tipped to the side. “Tonic what?”

“Tonic-clonics are the bigger seizures.”

“All set,” Charli interrupted, holding out Pippa’s folded shorts.

“Thank you.” She slid off the stool and grabbed the clothing.

“There is a bathroom down the hall to the right.” Charli pointed.

Pippa hurried to the door and closed herself inside. There was only a sink with a mirror over it and a toilet in the room. She stripped the pants off and folded them. Next, she grabbed her shorts. Her panties had been tucked inside. Heat bloomed in her cheeks. She was grateful Charli had taken care of this instead of Mason.

She got dressed and brought out the folded sweatpants. One of the pictures on the wall caught her attention. A smiling Mason without scars had his arm wrapped around a thin redheaded woman who looked like an older version of Aspen. Was that Mason’s wife? Of course the first man who makes me want to look twice in forever would be taken.

The front door opened and Mason came in with her dog right behind him. Lady came over to her, sniffing her and then sitting next to her.

“Thank you for taking care of Lady and me. I don’t know how I managed to walk up those stairs, but I’m sure it wasn’t without a lot of help,” Pippa said.
