“You didn’t walk. You were passed out before I got you to my truck. Of course I called Charli to make sure she’d be here first. I would have never taken you otherwise,” Mason said matter-of-factly as he took the pants from her.

He’d lifted her? “You carried me? That couldn’t have been easy.” She was no petite woman.

“It was fine.” Mason’s eyes slipped over her body, his jaw tensing.

Is he disgusted by me?

To say he was fit would be an understatement. He was huge, but if the bulging muscles from his short-sleeved shirt were any indication, the man was all muscle.

“Thank you for, uh, taking care of me today.”

“You saved my daughter. I’d say I’m still in your debt.” His deep voice sent a shiver through her.

He’s married. Her body needed to get the memo he was off-limits.

Not to mention he probably saw me wet myself and then had to carry my fat ass. If the look in his eyes was any indication, the attraction was one way. Not that it mattered. She was perfectly happy by herself . . . most days.

“Finn just called and Jamison is getting fussy, so I should get going,” Charli said, breaking her thoughts. “Do you want me to drop you off at home in my car, Pippa?”

Pippa turned to the woman she’d gotten to know over the last several months. “I would appreciate that. Thank you. I just need my shoes.”

Mason pointed to the neatly stacked row of footwear on the floor underneath the sweatshirts. She slipped her feet into her flip-flops.

Charli nodded to Mason. “Have a good night at work.”

“Will do,” Mason said, focusing on Charli.

Aspen came running over, a familiar sweatshirt in her hand. “Here’s your shirt you let me borrow.”

Pippa took the clothing from her. “Thanks.”

“Will you be okay at home alone?” Aspen asked, worriedly.

Pippa smiled, touched that this little girl seemed to care for her. “Absolutely. I have Lady here to keep watch over me.”

Aspen’s eyes darted to the dog. “Can I pet her?”

“Normally, I would have to say no, but I think after everything we’ve been through together, it’s okay if you say goodbye.”

“Does she bite?” Aspen asked, shying away.

“Nope, but when people pet her or try to talk to her, she gets distracted. She’s not like a regular pet; she’s a working dog. Her job is to watch me and alert me when I’m going to have a seizure. So, if she’s distracted, she can miss something and then I could end up getting hurt.”

“Oh. It’s okay. I don’t need to pet her, then.” Aspen dropped her hands.

“I’m okay right now. You can give her a scratch behind the ears. She loves that.”

The young girl reached out to pet the dog as Lady sniffed her. “She’s so soft.”

“She is. It was nice to see you today.”

“I’ll be in next week to get the new copy of Selfie.” Aspen smiled and backed up.

“Oh, yes, that seems to be a popular comic lately.”

“It’s my favorite.” Aspen beamed.

“Mine too.” Pippa winked and gave her a small wave goodbye.

Mason held the door open and Charli headed out. Pippa walked by him, a clean masculine scent wrapping around her as she looked up. Like fresh rain and mountain mist. “I know I said it already, but thanks again for everything.”

Mason nodded curtly. He was probably glad to be rid of her. She didn’t know why that bothered her so much. He was just a stranger. A stranger who saw me pee myself and then had to lift all two hundred fifty pounds of me.

On the bright side, she’d lived in Shattered Cove for over two years and had never run into him before.

She’d probably never have to see him again.
