“Stop!” Her eyes flew open. She shoved him, and he dropped the phone before he blocked the exit.

Lady growled and barked, but she fell to her side. She tried to get up, growling, but her eyes faded closed. The meat he’d fed her. “What did you do?”

“It’s just something to help her sleep so we’ll have time.”

“Time for what?” Her eyes raced to the alarm by the door. If she could hit the button, the police would come.

“To rid you of the evil spirits inhabiting your body.”

Her eyes widened. He thought she was possessed because of her seizures, just like her foster family had. No!

She shook her head and dove for the button. Her hand slapped against the alarm system right before he gripped her arms over her head and pushed her to the ground, settling his weight on her. Her head hit the wood floor. Her ears rang, and pain radiated in her skull. Terror gripped her. Not again. She wouldn’t be trapped again.

“It was you. The spray paint and the brick and the letters.”

He smiled, his face deceptively calm as she struggled against him. His legs locked around her waist and his hands pinned her to the floor. “I warned you. Gave you the chance to come on your own to be saved, and you didn’t listen.”

“Peter, let me go. I have epilepsy; it’s a medical condition. I don’t have evil spirits!” She shoved against him. She was strong, but he was stronger.

“I will call the demons out and set you free.” He reached for the flashing phone. “This will get them to surface.”

She took her opportunity and pulled one hand free, punching him as hard as she could in his throat. He choked and grabbed his neck as she shoved him off her and scrambled for the door. Lady lay on the ground. Pippa was torn. She should grab her pet, but she might not make it out if she did.

Adrenaline raced through her veins as she swung the door open. Sunlight blasted her sensitive eyes. She winced. Her head throbbed as she ran down the stairs as fast as she could. Her vision blurred. She stumbled, cradling her stomach with one hand and her head with the other as she fell the last few steps onto the concrete.

Everything went black.
