“She had a disease, by the sounds of it,” Roy added.

“Yeah. I think it’s going to take me a while to unpack this,” Mason admitted. After a beat of silence, he asked, “How is Pippa?”

“Now he asks,” Sophia grumbled from the other side her father.

Roy sat forward, his tired blue eyes locked on Mason. “My girl’s a fighter, just like her mother was. She’s going to make it through this.”

Mason breathed a sigh of relief. “I love your daughter.”

“You’ve got a funny way of showing that, cabrón,” Sophia snapped.

“Sophia is right,” Roy agreed.

“I fucked up. I promised her I’d be there for her, and then I wasn’t when she needed me most.”

“You did. But the question remains, what are you going to do about it?” Roy asked. “If you love my daughter, then prove it. And be warned—she’s her mother’s daughter in more ways than one. She’s going to make you work for it.”

Mason got to his feet. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”

Roy gave him a nod. “She’s in room three twenty.”

Mason turned around and headed for Pippa’s room. His heart raced as he walked towards the woman who had come into his life like an explosion, ripping his walls down and splitting the marrow of his body, decimating her way into his soul. Pippa Davis was his, and he wouldn’t stop until he proved that to her.

He walked into the room and pulled the curtain back.

Sebastian sat with his back to him, his hand holding an ultrasound wand on Pippa’s lower abdomen.

Pippa’s gaze was locked on to the grainy screen as Sebastian announced, “It’s two heartbeats. You’re having twins.”

All the blood drained from his face. Pippa was pregnant?

That was what she’d tried to tell him.

He staggered back a step.

Oh, God. What have I done?
