Pippa

“Twins?” Pippa gasped, shock blanketing her whole body. She was just getting her mind wrapped around the idea of one baby, but two? Oh, God. Her stomach rolled as movement from the corner of her eye had her turning towards the doorway.

Mason’s wide eyes looked between her and the ultrasound machine. “You’re pregnant.”

Shock was the only emotion in his tone. The tears she’d tried to hold back welled in her eyes. She blinked, sending them streaming down her cheeks. Lady licked her hand as if trying to comfort her.

Sebastian wiped her belly off quickly and packed up his machine. “I’ll, uh, give you two some privacy.”

Mason stepped to her side as Sebastian handed over the black-and-white photos of her little beans to her. She gripped the paper, thankful to have something to look at besides Mason’s stoic expression. Does he hate me now? Well, he shouldn’t. I didn’t get pregnant by myself.

“This is what you wanted to talk to me about.” His voice cracked as he took the seat next to her bed.

She nodded, afraid her voice would betray her. Hot tears trickled down her face. She wiped them away, trying to hold on to a semblance of her pride.

“I’m so sorry I left you to deal with this alone.”

She sniffed. “Running away from me is what you seem to do best.”

After a beat of silence, he cleared his throat. “You’re right.”

She risked a glance at him. His eyes glistened as he locked them with hers.

“I’m keeping it—them. And I don’t expect anything from you. I told you I wouldn’t bother you again, and I meant that.” She pulled her arms against her chest, a poor attempt at protecting herself from the rejection he was sure to deliver.

Twins. How was she supposed to do this on her own?

“I thought you were on birth control?” he said evenly.

She closed her eyes, fighting the onslaught of tears that wanted to erupt. Did he blame her?

“Shit, I didn’t mean—”

“I was. The doctor said my seizure meds can make them less effective. I didn’t know.”

“Is it safe for you to be pregnant?” He leaned in, resting his hand on the side rail of the hospital bed.

Her lungs squeezed tight with his growing closeness. “Yes.”

“And the, uh, babies? Will they be . . . okay?”

Her gaze moved to his. Concern marred his brow, and fear shone in his eyes.

“Yes.”

He let out a large exhale, like he’d been holding his breath. His shoulders sagged in what seemed like relief. “Oh, thank God.”

Confusion swirled in her mind. Her belly flipped. “I’m sorry. I know this is the last thing you need. I was thinking about relocating to Boston before the babies are born. I’ll need help, and I don’t want to complicate things any further with you and Aspen and my father.”

Panic flashed in his expression. He reached out, grasping her arm. “You’re leaving?”

She pulled her arm away, resting it on Lady’s head. “I-I don’t see how else I can do this.”

“Let me help.”

She blinked twice. Maybe the attack had left her with brain damage and she was now hallucinating. “What?”

“They’re my kids too. I’m the one who got you pregnant. I should be the one to help.”
