Knock. Knock.

Sophia walked to the door and opened it.

“Hello, I’m Pastor Calvin. I was wondering if I could speak to Pippa?”

Sophia turned towards her sister and raised a brow. The silent sister speak was clear. Do you want to talk to this guy or should I send him away?

A spark of anger lit inside her as nerves twisted in her belly. Pippa nodded. “You can let him in.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Sophia moved out of the way so Calvin could enter.

Calvin walked in, standing on the other side of the coffee table. Lady sat to attention by Pippa’s side.

Pippa turned towards her sister. “Weren’t you going somewhere?”

“I can wait.” Sophia looked towards the pastor.

“It’s okay. You go.” Pippa offered her a reassuring smile.

“I’ll be right back.” Sophia gave the pastor a warning look before she left, closing the door behind her.

Pippa motioned to the couch next to her. “I’d stand, but I might fall over at this point. Would you like to have a seat?”

Calvin gave her a friendly smile and took the spot beside her. “I’m sorry. I won’t take up much of your time. I heard about Peter, and I wanted to come and express how sorry I am that I didn’t see he needed help. I never would have imagined he’d become violent. I put you in harm’s way by introducing you, and I feel partly responsible.”

Pippa released a breath she’d been holding. “I appreciate that. And I hope he gets the help he needs.”

Calvin nodded. “Yes. I’ve been reflecting on this whole situation and praying for answers. My belief is that we should love everyone as Christ loved us. That is what I teach my congregation.”

“But you also teach that being gay is a sin.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Peter thought because I support the LGBTQ community, and host drag queen story hour, that my epilepsy was a demon possessing me . . . or so the sheriff informs me.”

A blush rose to his cheeks. “Yes, I-I’m not sure where he got that from.”

“Your words matter, Pastor. My sister’s love for her soon-to-be wife is no less pure than your love for your wife. You believe your god doesn’t make mistakes. Then he wouldn’t make people attracted to the same sex.”

Calvin nodded thoughtfully. “I see your point. I think we might just have to agree to disagree on this one.” He stood as her front door opened.

Mason walked in, his gaze snapping to the pastor. His shoulders tensed.

“Mr. Wright, good to see you. I was just on my way out.” The pastor gave her a wave before he left, closing the door behind him and leaving Pippa and Mason alone.

“Are you okay?” Mason asked, stepping closer. Bits of sawdust stuck to the hair on his muscular forearms.

“Yeah.”

“Sophia said you wanted to speak to me.”

“Did you mean what you said about me being able to rely on you?”

Mason nodded.

She took a fortifying breath. “Because I need your help.”
