Aspen disappeared back in the changing room as Mason asked, “So what’s next?”

“Now, she probably needs shoes.”

“Okay. Then how about we go to Atlantis for dinner?” Mason’s gaze burned the side of her face.

Dinner? She’d heard of Atlantis, but she’d never been. It seemed a little fancy. She looked down at the white peasant shirt and the pink shorts she had on. As she pinched the fabric of her top, her eyebrows drew together. She was a little underdressed, wasn’t she?

“What you’re wearing is perfect.” Mason’s voice cut through her inner anxiety, as if he’d read her mind. “I mean, we could always run you home to change if you’d be more comfortable, but it’s a casual atmosphere there.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

“Okay,” he parroted, sticking both hands in his front pockets almost as if he were nervous. But that couldn’t be true. This was a casual dinner between friends. It wasn’t like it was a date. Aspen would be there, and Pippa had joked that they’d have to feed her for her to come shopping, although she’d meant more like mall cafeteria food.

Aspen reemerged from the changing room, handing over her dress to her dad. “Now what?”

Mason nodded to the other side of the store. “Now, we find you some shoes that you won’t break your neck in, and then we’re taking Pippa to Atlantis as a thank-you for claiming her Saturday.”

Aspen’s eyes lit up. “I love Atlantis. Have you ever been, Pippa?”

She shook her head. “Nope, but it sounds wonderful.”

And so did spending more time with this little family.

Of course, it was just temporary. Mason had enough on his plate, raising a teen girl by himself. He didn’t need any more burden. Regardless of the fact that the man had set her body on fire with just a brush of his hand, this would have to stay platonic.

It didn’t mean he wouldn’t play a starring role in her fantasies tonight.
