“Oh, what a cute dog. Hello, sweetie.” A woman’s voice drew Pippa’s attention as the stranger reached out to pet Lady, who was wearing her vest that clearly stated Do not pet or interact with me.

Pippa held up her hand as a young man she recognized as Peter, from the church, stepped out from behind a stack of books. “No, please don’t touch her.”

“Oh, but she’s so precious. Hey, girl.” The woman’s voice changed as if she were talking to a baby, and Lady’s ears perked up, the dog’s gaze on the woman.

Pippa reached for the leash. “I said—”

Ringing filled her ears as Mason stepped closer, making it seem like the walls were closing in. Everyone was too close.

He spoke. She couldn’t make out the words; it sounded as if he were in a wind tunnel. Her face flushed, as if a hot towel had been wrapped around her head fresh from the dryer.

Oh no. Not again.
