“Why didn’t she fall and shake like she did last time?” Aspen asked as he opened the passenger-side door of his truck.

“There are different types of seizures. The first one you saw was one of the bigger ones. I don’t remember what they’re called, but most seizures don’t look like that.”

“Tonic-clonics,” Aspen supplied.

“Right. Maybe it would help you if I showed you what to do if it happens to her and you’re alone with her?”

“Yes,” she agreed before he shut the door and walked around the truck.

He’d barely climbed in before she asked, “Do people die from seizures?”

His chest squeezed. He’d never taken to lying to his daughter. “Yes, but it’s extremely rare.”

“I don’t want Pippa to die.” Aspen looked up at him with her sad big blue eyes.

He enveloped her hand in his and squeezed. “She won’t. Hers have to be relatively mild if she’s able to live by herself.” That wasn’t actually true, but he couldn’t stand the thought of his daughter worrying about Pippa.

“Shouldn’t she have someone with her besides Lady?” Aspen’s worry was spiraling.

“I’m sure she wouldn’t be living alone if the doctors hadn’t said it was safe. She has family, too, remember? They wouldn’t leave her by herself if she was in any danger.” I hope.

“But her family lives far away.” A light entered her eyes. “Maybe we can be her family.”

Aspen’s innocent words were like a knife to his chest. She had the biggest heart.

He’d probably destroyed what little progress he and Pippa had made at getting to know each other after he’d kissed her and run. The woman had enough on her plate without having to deal with his issues too.

For two weeks, Pippa’s moans and whimpers had haunted his dreams. Every single cold shower he’d had ended in him coming against the tiles, picturing Pippa’s pink lips wrapped around him. She was a distraction. It had been torture trying to stay away.

If only he could get this crushing urge for Pippa under control.
