“No. We weren’t allowed to celebrate at the compound. Or do a lot of other stuff there,” Dani answered before Brynn had the chance.

Iris cast her a questioning glance. “The compound?”

Brynn needed to change the subject back to a safer topic. “I know Aaron usually puts on a dinner for everyone at Hope.”

Iris studied her a moment before she nodded. “He does?”

“Yes.”

“My son doesn’t ever do things halfway, does he?” Iris laughed.

Brynn shook her head, an amused smile playing on her lips. “Kind of like this birthday.”

“Oh, just you wait. The surprises are not done yet.”

“What could he possibly do next?” She turned to Dani. “Were you in on this?”

Dani smirked. “Yes. And I’m not saying a word. You’ll just have to wait and see.”

“You tell her, Danielle. Patience is a virtue,” Iris teased.

Brynn’s gaze focused on her sparkling red toenails as discomfort made way for excitement. She never knew what to expect from her husband, and she felt spoiled with all this attention he gave her—even after everything that happened between them. The way he’d held her this morning and kissed her—that wasn’t for show. Was he still holding out hope that she could give more to him?

“I knew once my son fell for someone, he’d fall hard. I’m just glad he found a woman worthy enough of his love,” Iris said.

Brynn looked up, her eyes wide. She really thought that? Wow. Gratitude that this woman thought her worthy of her son swelled in her chest. But could Aaron love Brynn? Denial crept its way up her spine, strangling her rib cage. Sure, he’d said this was real, but that didn’t mean he loved her. No. He cared for her, that was obvious, but was it possible to love someone you didn’t even truly know? He hadn’t seen all the darkest broken parts of her. He didn’t know what she’d been through, what she’d done. Therefore, he could never really love her. She wouldn’t dare hope. Leaving the compound meant she was done believing in myths.
