His nose skimmed her spine.

“But that’s what they are. Reminders of what you’ve been through and survived. Not predictions of where you’re going.”

He tucked her back against his chest, nuzzling his chin into the crook of her neck. “Your scars are a part of you, like your freckles.”

“They’re ugly,” she argued.

“They show you’ve walked through the fires of hell and survived. It’s pretty badass if you ask me. It shows your strength. And that is beautiful.” He kissed her shoulder, sending chills racing through her body.

Her heart drummed. Joy burst like a giant water balloon in her chest, releasing a gush of warm elation sinking into every cell. Hope glowed within her. Potent and powerful. Her family had promised her leaving would mean hell when, instead, it had brought her to heaven. Life truly couldn’t get better than this.
