Brynn didn’t feel so strong most of the time. More like a shaky leaf amid a storm, clinging to the branch for dear life.

“Aaron needed someone who would be able to give to him for once, and I see he’s found that in you. Even a savior needs saving sometimes.” He winked and walked over to his wife, slipping his arm around her as they watched Dani open her gifts.

Brynn should have been enjoying the moment, but something niggled in the back of her mind at what Samuel had said. Had she given anything to Aaron? Or had she just taken? Was he drawn to her because he’d seen the brokenness in her and wanted to save her? Or did he truly see her as his equal?

Aaron walked in with a smile, handing his dad a drink before he walked towards Brynn. He kissed her cheek and tucked her close to his side, his hand resting on her hip. She turned to him, searching his eyes. Doubt crept up her spine like a dark shadow. Because if Samuel was right, and Aaron was only interested in her because he saw her as some sort of project—someone he could save—it would destroy her. But he’d given her no cause to doubt him. He’d always been blunt and honest.

He focused on her with a grin. “I can’t wait to see you open my gift.”

“I already have.” She touched the earrings dangling from her ears.

“I have something else for you too.”

“Oh?”

“But it’s not down here. You definitely want to open this one in private.” His eyebrows moved up and down suggestively.

A smile tugged the corners of her mouth up. “What did you do?”

“You’ll have to wait and see, sunshine. Wait and see.” He chuckled.

She’d wait, and she’d watch. And she’d hope she was enough.
