He shook his head, everything inside him roiling at the thought of watching her walk out his door. His heart raced, every beat agony. “Don’t do this, Brynn. Give me a chance to make this right. I didn’t mean it the way it came out. I love you. I’ll fight for you, for us. Just—” He ran his hands over his head. “I won’t let you go.”

Her face paled.

“Jesus. I don’t mean it like that. God dammit! I keep fucking this up,” Aaron yelled and walked away from her, pacing the floor. He stopped, staring at Brynn as the floor squeaked from the hall. Dani had heard the shouting and came to investigate.

“Is there nothing I can say to convince you to stay and give this more time?”

Brynn dragged the suitcase as she walked past him and towards the door. She turned her head at the last moment, not even looking at him, but her voice broke. “Let me go.”

Aaron’s ears rang as his blood thumped wildly in his chest. How had everything gone to hell so quickly?

“Fuck!” he screamed, punching his hand into the mattress.

He was losing the most important people in his life. Why? He’d only meant to help, and somehow, he’d ended up hurting the woman he loved most.

Let me go.

Aaron’s chest felt like someone had slammed a battering ram through it. Devastating loss encompassed him as he fell to his knees, his face falling into his hands as tears tracked down his cheeks. Now he was the broken one.
