His large palm reached the length of her waist. He could feel her rib bones. Was she skipping meals?

He led her in slow purposeful steps around the room, and slowly, she relaxed into his hold.

“I’m going to move a little closer now, so we can dance like we would at the wedding. Is that alright?” he asked.

“Okay.” Her voice was all breath.

He tugged her closer, wrapping both his arms around her waist, and she did the same. Leaning down, he inhaled her lavender scent. Her body was still tense in his arms, so he carefully moved to the music as it changed to a jazzier ensemble, the music still slow and deliberate. It took two turns around the room, before Brynn’s head relaxed against his upper stomach.

Pride swelled in his rib cage that she’d trusted him enough to let him touch her, a gift he wouldn’t take for granted from a woman like Brynn. This was huge.

“Okay. Now’s the time for our final hurdle . . . Can I kiss you?”

Brynn tensed against him, this time holding him tighter. But after a moment, she tilted her head up and showcased her long delicate neck. His eyes dropped to her pink full lips, waiting for her verbal consent.

“Yes,” she whispered.

He dragged a knuckle across her porcelain cheek, and she shivered. Or was she trembling? He searched her eyes, apprehension mingled with fear shining back. But it was the first glimpse of arousal in those emerald orbs that urged him on.

Ever so slowly, he leaned in until he could taste her exhale on his lips. He held her face reverently as he lowered his mouth to capture hers.

Brynn reared back. “I’m sorry, I can’t.”

He nodded, letting the disappointment roll off him. “That’s alright.”

“I’ll do it for the wedding, to make it believable. But only when needed. And yes, thank you, a warning would be nice before you touch me otherwise.” She stepped back again, putting even more space between them, and focused on her fidgeting hands.

“Whatever you need.”

“I appreciate your patience and understanding. I hope you know that.” She lifted her chin.

He nodded.

“I better go.” Brynn turned and left the room.

Aaron let out a sigh and raked a hand over his face. They’d made progress today—a lot in fact. That was nothing to be taken lightly. He’d entered this agreement to help Danielle—to ensure she didn’t end up like his own brother had. But maybe he’d be able to help Brynn too.
