“Okay. Our dresses are supposed to be delivered this week. They had to shorten mine.” She slammed her mouth closed, as if she thought she’d said too much.

“Does this door lock?” He motioned to the weak-looking handle hanging on the door.

She shook her head. “No, but the one upstairs does.”

He’d have to fix it for her and Dani’s added protection. “Make sure to lock up behind you.”

She nodded.

He waited until she went in before he returned to his car. The windshield wipers swished across, clearing the rain long enough for him to make out the dim light glowing from one of the windows above the garage.

He sighed. This was going to be a lot more complicated than he originally thought. But if he could help one kid from ending up like his brother, it was worth it.
