The rug underneath his bed was a light grey, contrasting with the dark wood floors.

“Your house is lovely,” Brynn mused.

“The bathroom in here has a tub, unlike the other down the hall. It’s equipped with jets too. If you ever want to use it, feel free.”

She stepped back into the hallway and nodded. A bath sounded divine. She reached up and scratched the back of her neck, and then tugged at one of what seemed like a hundred hair pins stuck in her hair-sprayed hair.

“Do you need help taking your hair down?” Aaron asked, always the observant one.

She blushed. Her body ached from all the activity. She was drained from the anxiety and action of the last week. What she wanted most was to fall into bed and sleep for three days straight. The sooner she could get out of this dress and hairdo, the sooner she could do that. “Yes, please.”

Aaron’s shock showed in his widened eyes and the slight part of his full lips. “Come on in here.”

He opened the bathroom door, though it was larger than her whole apartment, so it could hardly be called that. There was a glassed-in shower as well as a large whirlpool-style tub. Slate floors, and a double sink. Brynn stepped in front of the mirror, taking the opportunity to study her new husband as he focused intently on his task.

Aaron pulled pins out and set them in a growing pile on the sink. Her veil followed. His hand brushed against the curve of her neck, and she closed her eyes. Goose bumps erupted on her sensitive flesh. Why did his touch affect her so?

He ran his fingers through her scalp, massaging as he did so. A tiny moan escaped her mouth before her eyes shot open. A flush of embarrassment heated her cheeks as he smiled and continued his ministrations.

“Do you need help with the buttons on the back of the dress?” Aaron asked, biting back a smile.

She froze, all the warm fuzziness gone, replaced with icy fear.

His eyes met hers in the mirror. “Brynn, I meant it when I said I would respect your boundaries. This looks like a complicated task to do with help, let alone by yourself. I just didn’t think you could reach it. I only meant to be of assistance. I’ll undo it just enough so you can go back to your room alone and get it off for bed.”

Her chest tightened, his calm voice and kind promise bringing a wave of guilt crashing down on her. If Aaron was as good as everyone said, and she hoped so, it was unfair to be so suspicious of him. But she couldn’t help it. So much reminded her of her past—of Paul.

She nodded and looked down at the sink. “I would appreciate it.”

Aaron moved slowly, undoing the top button, his knuckles grazing her spine and sending bolts of lightning buzzing through her. Her head was fuzzy, and her heart raced. Everything was warm and tingly as he moved down her spine, the dress loosening with each undone button.

“That should be enough for you to slip it off.” His voice was raw, as if he, too, was affected by her closeness.

She turned around, facing him. His eyes dropped to her lips.

She licked them instinctively. “I know I keep saying it, but I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done.”

His swallow was audible. Some unseen energy surged between them, thickening the air and making it hard to draw in a full breath. Tingles raced up her body, as if tiny threads were winding them together, cinching tighter and tighter, drawing her to him like a magnet. Her focus fell to his lips, so soft and sweet.

Brynn blinked and shook her head, as if it would rid her of the spell. She muttered goodnight and escaped to her bedroom, locking the door behind her before she could do something stupid like kiss her husband.
