AARON

Aaron hefted the last box up the stairs. Brynn and Dani didn’t own much, so it had only taken one trip from their apartment to his home. Dani was fluttering around her new room with what seemed like a permanent smile on her face.

“This is the best room ever, Aaron. I feel like a princess!” Dani squealed.

He chuckled. “I’m glad you like it. I already told your mom, but I want you to know nothing is off-limits in the house. You’re welcome to anything. Just make sure you wear a life vest when you take a boat out onto the lake.”

“Okay!” Dani bounced onto her bed, then spread out like a starfish.

“Did you check the closet?” Aaron asked.

Dani sat up. “Yes. Oh, the clothes are perfect. Thank you so much.”

He nodded. “Of course.”

“Is that the last of it?” Brynn asked, coming up behind him. She was back to wearing a pair of worn jeans and a threadbare T-shirt.

“Yup. I was thinking we could order out for dinner and have it delivered. Sound good?”

“Yes,” Dani readily agreed.

“I can cook,” Brynn offered.

“Nonsense. I’m sure you’re as tired as I am. Let’s just order out and relax tonight. Pizza, Indian, Chinese, Ethiopian food, or we could order from Atlantis.”

“I’ve never had most of those,” Dani mused. “How about Chinese?”

Aaron blinked. They’ve never had Chinese food?

Brynn must have read the question in his expression because she explained, “We don’t get the chance to eat out much.”

Aaron clapped his hands.

Brynn jumped and took a step back, making him immediately regret the quick movement.

“Sounds like I have my work cut out for me. We’ll have to order one of everything so we can figure out what your favorite is.”

“That’s too much,” Brynn protested. “I’m sure we’ll love whatever you pick.”

“But it’s more fun my way. Besides, leftovers are the best.” Aaron gave her what he hoped was a reassuring smile.

Brynn nodded, her expression unreadable.

“I’ll go put the order in.” Aaron left them alone and walked downstairs to the kitchen, where he pulled a menu from the drawer.

Brynn walked in as he turned around. “Oh, I meant to tell you. Just make a list of everything we need to do like getting you and Dani on my insurance and—”

“You don’t have to put me on there. Just Danielle would be perfect.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

“You need insurance too. Besides, I get a deal with a family plan.” Maybe. Probably it was true. She was his wife now, and he’d be damned if she went without even the most basic needs. When was the last time she’d had a general checkup?

She sighed. “Okay, if you’re sure.”

“Absolutely. And once we get a copy of the marriage license, you can get your name change done. What then? Driver’s license?”

Brynn rubbed her thumb on an invisible spot on the counter. “I hadn’t thought of that. But I guess I could use it.” She hesitated and then shook her head more confidently before she looked at him. “Yes, that would help me be more independent.”
