“What else?” he asked, dropping his hand to his side as he sat back in his seat.

Cool air brushed over where he’d touched, sending an acute sense of loss barreling over her. “What do you mean?” she asked, confused.

“Get Dani in school, get your GED, and what else? How about that driver’s license?”

Her eyes widened. “Oh, well, I don’t know how to drive, actually.”

“You’ve never gotten behind the wheel before?” Aaron took another drink of his coffee.

Brynn shook her head. Women were not allowed to ride a bike, much less drive a car at the compound.

“Grab your coffee and follow me.” He stood, draining his cup.

“Uh, okay, where are we going?” She slipped her hands around the mug and followed as he walked towards the entryway.

“To show you how to drive, of course.” Aaron slipped on a pair of sandals with his socks still on. It was the one fault she could find with the man. Who wore socks with slides?

“Let’s go,” Aaron urged her.

“But I, I can’t—”

He spun round, his gaze soft, his mouth turned up in an encouraging smile. “You haven’t tried it yet, so how would you know? It takes practice, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time. Promise.” He lifted the keys from the hook and winked before opening the door and heading out towards the garage.

She stood there, nerves melding with excitement in her belly. Affection blossomed, igniting every cell like fireworks. A piece of her armor broke off, slipping into oblivion as Aaron offered her another big step towards her total independence.

“You coming?” he called.

Brynn slipped on a pair of flip-flops and stepped outside into the sunshine. To her left was a gorgeous blue lake fed from a mountain spring, and to her right was the man who had earned more trust than she’d thought possible in such a short amount of time, holding the keys to her ultimate freedom.

If only this was real.
