Aaron cleared his throat. “I think she’s right. I’m glad you have someone you can talk to about everything. You know my door is always open, too, right?”

Dani nodded. “Yeah. And thank you.”

“Of course. Now, about your mom’s birthday—”

His phone rang from his pocket, so he fished it out. “Hold on a sec.” His mother’s name flashed on the screen, but it was too late to ignore; his finger had already accidentally swiped the answer icon. Aaron held the cell up to his ear. “Hello?”

“Oh, thank goodness I caught you.” His mother sounded out of breath while a murmur of voices blended into the background.

“What is it?”

“I need you to pick me up from the airport in Boston.”

“What? Why—”

“I left your father.”

A swoosh of air escaped Aaron as his mind spun. What?

“And I hoped I could stay with you. I know we didn’t leave on the best of terms, but I want to fix that.”

Aaron glanced at Dani. “Now’s not a good time, Mom.”

“Part of the reason I went was we don’t agree. On big things. Things I know you care about.”

He ran a hand over his face and shook his head. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

Aaron hung up the phone and stared at it as he tried to make sense of it all. His mother had left his father and was coming to stay with him. Stay . . . in his guest room . . . that Brynn was currently using. Shit!

His mother’s visit was the absolute last thing he needed to deal with. But she was his mother, and if she’d done the impossible and wanted to make things right . . . well, he’d hear her out. Aaron stood to ask Brynn, but then stopped. She wasn’t home. She’d gone Christmas shopping with Charli to the city.

He raked a hand over his face.

“Is everything alright?” Dani asked.

“Yeah. My mom is apparently coming for a visit.”

Dani straightened, worry flashing in her blue eyes.

“She said she wants to make things right, and she’s coming here without my father. If she makes you uncomfortable, I’ll put her up in a hotel. But I’d like to hear her out and have her stay at least tonight. Are you okay with that?”

Dani hesitated, then shrugged. “Sure.”

“Thanks. I just need to get a hold of your mom now.” He picked up his phone and dialed Brynn. He hoped she would understand.

Like he didn’t have enough to deal with without his mother coming into town. When it rained, it poured.
