Sarah peeked at him. “I guess so.”

They wandered for a few minutes, and all he could think about was how much he wanted to tell her he wanted her back. None of what happened mattered, not if they could overcome it together.

There was just the issue of whether she had spoken the truth about how she felt regarding his alcoholism. Dax stretched out his hand and tightened it into a fist a few times, itching to take hers and lace his fingers with it.

One month apart and now he didn’t know how to act around her. He just needed to say something, anything. That’s why he’d come all this way.

Dax stopped and turned to face her. “I think it’s clear why I’m here, but I’m going to say it anyway.”

“Dax—”

“I want you to know that it doesn’t matter. None of it. None of this. We could have communicated with each other better—right before you left. We could have showed more love for each other. And I want to promise you right now that I intend on doing just that.”

She stared at him, unreadable. Dang it, how he wished he could read her mind right now.

The silence was unbearable and he continued to ramble. “I want you, no matter what happened, no matter what your background is. I still think you’re the most amazing woman I have ever met. You make me want to be a better man. I never thought I’d be able to find this kind of love, Sarah.” His voice grew hoarse. “I can’t fall in love without you.” He searched her gaze. “Please just say something.”

Sarah closed the distance between them and threw her arms around him, burying her face in his neck. Her body shook, and he slowly brought his arms around her to hold her tight. Dax held her like that, letting her use him for whatever comfort she’d been denied for so long.

When her tears stopped and she pulled back, he framed her face with his large hands and brushed at her tears with his thumbs. “What’s the matter?”

She let out a watery laugh. “Nothing.”

“Then why are you crying?”

Sarah pressed her lips together, turning her face so she could kiss his palm. Chills swept through his body as he waited for her to answer. “No one has ever accepted me for who I am without some kind of demand or pointing out my flaws. No one but you.” She closed her eyes briefly. “I’m so sorry for what I said—how I acted when I left. I want you to know that I didn’t mean any of it. You are more of a man than anyone I know. I love you, Dax.” She gave him a soft smile. “I didn’t think it was possible to find someone who could love me so unconditionally, but I guess I did.”

“Oh,” he whispered, “there’s nothing that could stop me from loving you.”

He pressed a soft, firm kiss to her lips and the familiar fire that had been missing since she left returned with a vengeance. It started in his stomach and grew into his chest, warming his whole body.

Being in Sarah’s arms was heaven. She was his other half, from their estranged upbringings to the mistakes they shared. If there was such a thing as a soul mate, she would be it. He slipped his free arm around her waist and pulled her closer. Her hands slipped into his hair, knocking his hat to the ground.

A sense of peace filtered through the heat raging within the two of them. A sense of rightness that couldn’t be shaken. She was his light, and if they were able to overcome this, then nothing would be able to stand in their way.

He pulled back and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “So what do we do now? I mean, I guess I could get used to seeing you dressed like this.” Dax lifted his brows suggestively.

She laughed and shoved his shoulder with her fingertips. “I have a better idea.”

Sarah

Sarah squealed as Dax led Cricket from the back of a trailer and hurried toward them. “I can’t believe you were able to get her back! How much did they want for her?”

Dax grinned at her. “I called in a favor. Shane is willing to let you keep training her and keep her, but he wants to be able to use her in sessions if he needs an extra horse.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

“Really. She’s all yours. You’ve earned her.”

Sarah leaned against Cricket, rubbing her up and down her neck and back. The horse was the most beautiful thing she owned—and she’d have the perfect place for her to live. Later today she would close on the property for the small ranch she had purchased. It would be a few months before they could break ground for the house and the barn, but it was all planned out. Everything was finally coming together.

She was happy. And rightfully so.

Her eyes met Dax’s, and they shared a quiet moment as if he knew exactly what she was thinking. This was how it had been for the last couple of weeks. They continued to grow closer and share more about themselves. Falling in love with him was easy.

“Oh. You got your horse back.”
