“Yes, definitely.” Liv leaned over her ear. “The password to get past security is ‘Brussel Sprouts.’”

Cadence giggled at having to say that to the security guard. She’d leave that secret password stuff to Porter… he’d hate it. Squeezing Liv’s hand, Cadence left her post to find him. He should be easy to find with his height, but she’d overestimated hers and found herself on her tiptoes, trying to see past the sea of bobbing heads.

This was impossible!

Picking up her phone, she was about to call Porter when she found the message from him instead. “Cadence! Lacy is after you! Get out of there now!”

Her body went numb. Porter had just been here… or was he? Was that Nash?

Searching the crowd for any sign of him, she whipped around to leave.

She’d call him back and figure out what this was about. Another text flashed across her screen from Porter. “Where are you?”

Her fingers fumbled with her phone.

A hand gripped her shoulders. She gasped when they swung her around.

“Porter…” her voice died on her lips when she saw who had her. Lacy. His dark eyes glittered like smoldering coals. He sneered at her with all the disdain that until this moment, she’d only suspected he felt for her when he’d used and thrown her away. She’d never fully seen his hatred until now.

“What did you do?” Lacy shrilled. “You set them all against me! This is your fault. All my investors are backing out. I’m ruined.”

Porter had done it! But what exactly? Cadence didn’t know how to fight Lacy, wasn’t even sure how Porter had managed to ruin him, but she’d never seen Lacy look so desperate. She tried to pull away.

“Oh no, no, no,” he said. “Not so fast. I need you.”

She pushed him back. “Let me go or I’ll scream!”

“You scream and you lose the last chance you have of helping that idiot.”

What did he mean?

“I need his brother,” Lacy said. “Where’s Nash? Have you seen him?”

Her thoughts went to the man that she’d thought was Porter only a few minutes earlier. She shook her head.

He snorted. “It doesn’t matter. Crawley and Stein will take care of him.”

Horror ripped through her. Lacy moved his jacket aside so that she could see the gun that he had stashed there. “I’m not going to hesitate to use this if I have to, Cadence.”

Her terrified gaze went to the sweet people in the crowd; some of these faces were of people that she was beginning to love. Even if she tried to scream or run, she knew that he’d shoot anyone who got in his way. She couldn’t allow Lacy to hurt them in this strange frenzy that he was in.

“Porter and his brothers have gone too far,” he said. “I’m not playing anymore.”

Cadence could see that. She pushed her phone into her pocket, hoping that Lacy didn’t catch her sly maneuver. “What do you want from me?”

Lacy’s hand went to her pocket. He slowly slid out her phone, his every move dripping venom. “Let’s see what Porter’s been writing you.”

Chapter Thirty-Five

Somewhere onstage above him, Emily and her brother were performing the most adorable rendition of “You Are My Sunshine” that Porter had ever heard. The sounds of its happy notes warped through his ears like the haunting soundtrack playing in the background of a horror movie as he searched the crowd for Cadence.

He felt like vomiting.

She wasn’t answering any of his texts.

Eva had dropped him off at the front, promising to meet up with him later. She had some really, reallyimportant business to do on her phone, but she was absolutely certain that West was on top of everything here.

Sure, right!
