“Precisely. An overseer who wants the best for their people is a far better example of balance. So, we try to find species that can produce a companion or, at least, accommodate us in the short term. Those unions rarely last more than a few years. We wear out the energy of those who are not companion class. They have nothing left to give.”

She shivered.

“Don’t worry. You are not in that classification.” His hands slowly moved over her breasts, kneading gently and pinching at her nipples.

“I have to ask. Did I come with a manual?”

He nuzzled her ear. “Of course. There are downloads available for any members of your species who wish to mate or enjoy themselves with another species.”

She licked her lips. “Is there a file for Hmrain?”

He chuckled. “No. I am more than willing to tell you what you need to know.”

“Fine. How do I please you?”

His whisper rippled through her soul. “Stand in front of me and be naked. I will draw what I need from you.”

She swallowed. “Right. When the first disbursement comes out, it will go to Lily?”

“Of course. I am covering your expenses for the first decade until we settle into a more comfortable existence with each other.”

She blinked. “I thought that was just room and board.”

“Also medical, clothing, adornment, transport. When we go off-world, we will use my ship at my expense.”

She turned to look at him. “Off-world?”

“I have to pick up plants and soil samples to copy to cover the surface of this world. Most have already been acquired, but I have a shipment to pick up in a month or so.” His hand lazily stroked her belly.

She blinked. “A ship?”

He smiled. “A ship. A new Hmrain is sent into the universe with funds and a ship. My ship has functioned for five hundred years. There are three worlds in my star system. We will visit them all eventually. The other two are already populated and functioning well. They are a few days’ travel away.”

Iris waited for a few heartbeats, and then she said, “So, what happens next?”

“We get you comfortable with my body, you get some more food into you, and then we sleep.”

She nodded. “Can I get something to drink first?”

He sat up with her in his arms. “Of course.”

“Oh, no. I didn’t mean for you to get up.”

Yavor chuckled. “You are very polite, aren’t you?”

She shrugged. “It seems a safer course of action.”

He caressed her cheek, and she caught her scent on his fingers. She quivered in response and tried not to look as mortified as she felt. He was still in study mode because he murmured, “You do not care for your own scent? That is where I found the rivers and lakes.”

She shrugged. “I don’t get down there that often.”

He threaded his fingers through her short hair. “I will verify your situation often. Hourly when we start and then daily at least after that.”

She swallowed. “That seems... excessive.”

His kiss was soft, and she leaned into him. “How else will I know when you are in heat?”

She paused. “They suspended it while I was at the station. I know that we were sent with shots, but I think they are still in the shuttle.”
