“It is understandable. You didn’t rest the entire trip.” He stroked her arm.

“There was so much to see.”

“We can go back every sixty days or so. As long as you are up for it.”

Iris perked up. “Can I wear different clothing?”

“No. Consider this your uniform.” He stroked her bare ribs and the curve of her hip. He slid his fingers between her thighs and paused. “You were hiding this from me?”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“It’s your cycle.”

“Then, it’s exactly what you think.” She eased out of his arms. “Is there a provision for this?”

“There are supplies that your sibling insisted on in the necessary.”

She nodded and went to tidy up, but she froze and turned. “Why do I have a period?”

“Your body is going through normal cycles.” He stood up and walked over to her. “It might be your exposure to the nanites. They purge chemical interference from your body. It means you are whole and healthy.”

“You knew this would happen.”

“I haven’t had a proper mate before, so I guessed. I am very happy, though, Irith.”

She felt a twinge, opened her mouth, closed it, and then went into the restroom. Cleanup was easy, but the absorbent shield attached to her, and that was it. Closed for maintenance.

She was grumpy when she emerged and said, “I think I did it wrong.”

“May I check?”

She suffered the embarrassment of him verifying things.

“Nope. All good. Do you feel better?”

“Now that I am not leaking blood? A little.”

He tugged her back to the lounge and curled her against him.

Her back twinged, her belly cramped, and she didn’t say anything. He pressed his warm hands against her back and belly, massaging lightly.

She groaned softly and leaned against him, dropping her head to his chest. “I had forgotten how rotten this feels.”

“Ah, sorry. I would have arranged a mechanical control if you needed it. We will see to this as soon as you have run your cycle.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek. “Rest now. You have had a big day.”

She nodded and let the scent of him ease her into sleep.

Iris woke up, and she was in bed with him. His hand was still on her belly, massaging gently. Light was creeping across the bed, and she felt better with none of the normal heaviness she associated with her period.

“How are you feeling, Irith?”

“Better. Well-rested anyway. I think I need to get up.”

He let her up, and she was naked except for the forcefield maxi pad, but there was nothing in it. She frowned and kept going. She removed the shield and checked, and there was... nothing. No trace of blood. She washed up and walked up to him. “What did that thing do?”

“The lining is shedding, yes?”

She frowned. “Yes.”
