Precipitation finally let go after a long moment. He sighed loudly as he dropped to his feet and then adjusted his dress in a huff. “Well, that was absolutely delightful.”

“What happened?”

“I have no idea!” Precipitation threw up his hands. “Rebecca and I were planning to visit Myrna and Finn because, wow, they have been going at it hot and heavy, and they always have a very vigorous quickie before an investigation—”

“Sip.”

“Right, sorry! Anyway!” Precipitation put his hands on his hips. “I came here to the kitchen because Cary said he wanted to have a snack, and I figured I could watch him eat for a bit and then go find Rebecca. I saw a few shades, but I didn’t think anything of it. While I enjoyed Cary ravenously lapping at an ice cream cone, the little bastards grabbed me! I got away from them, but then more came!”

“What the fuck?”

“I don’t know! They were all over me! They held me down, and it was so dark, and I was getting so very tired. And then I… I…” Precipitation’s eyes widened. “Oh, shit.Shit. Who am I? What’s my name?”

“You’re Precipitation Per Chance,” Huck said quickly. “I call you Sip. You’re my best friend in the whole fuckin’ afterlife, and you look absolutely stunning in that dress. Your sister murdered you a bit for stealing said dress and fucking her almost husband the day before their wedding. You are badass and awesome, and you had this thing with a guy who didn’t even know he was sensitive and there was lots of filthy sex involved. You are fucking amazing.”

Precipitation took a few slow breaths to calm down, and he held his head high. “Damn right I am.”

“You okay now?” Huck frowned and reached out to squeeze Precipitation’s shoulders.

“I’m all right. Thank you.” Precipitation shooed Huck’s hands away. “I just got lost for a moment, but I am perfectly fine now.” He narrowed his eyes at Huck. “Who are you again?”

“Wait, seriously?”

“No. I just love seeing that dumbstruck look on your face.” Precipitation winked slyly. “Now, can we discuss that insane blast of whatever that came out of you?”

“Huh? Oh, right.” Huck shrugged. “I don’t know. I was kinda freaking out about you being dragged away by shades, and it just… Well, it just kinda sneezed out of me.”

“Sneezed?”

“Yeah.”

“You sneezed out a blast of spiritual energy that drove scads of shades off with their tails between their legs?”

“Yup.”

“All righty then.” Precipitation snorted.

“I still don’t get why the shades came after you.” Huck glanced around the kitchen for a long moment. “I’ve never seen so many in here before. Have you?”

“No. Never. The only place I know of where they gather like that is down in the damn morgue.”

“The crew is supposed to be investigating down there. Do you think they could have, like… scared them out or something?”

“I don’t think the investigation has quite started yet, has it? And shades don’t usually have the energy to move like that.” Precipitation’s brow furrowed. “Unless someone charged them to…”

“Huh?”

“In the same way your medium can share his energy in many delicious and debauched ways with you, he could share it with shades to empower them.”

“Grant wouldn’t do that.” Huck scoffed.

“Well, they had to get it from somewhere. I doubt they were able to gather that much of a charge on their own! Especially so many at once.”

“Maybe they just felt frisky from all the people wandering around the morgue here lately,” Huck suggested, even though he didn’t quite believe it. His stomach was turning in knots, and that terrible feeling of dread was back. “Hey, where’s Rebecca?”

“Rebecca?” Precipitation blinked. “I suppose she’s still en route to see Myrna and Finn for their little quickie.”

“Come on.” Huck grabbed Precipitation’s arm and pulled. “We gotta go find her. Like, now.”
