Jaelyn and I might not have a choice but to move away from Braedon, the only town we’ve ever lived in. I can find us a place closer to her school where we won’t have to worry about her driving back and forth. I’ll find a job there and we’ll make things work. It’s not like we have anything here in Braedon left anymore. Once I get ahold of the fire chief, I’ll get what we can salvage, and we’ll build a new life somewhere else. That’s the only thing I can do.

“What are you doing?” Jae asks walking in the kitchen where I’m sitting at the table with my phone.

“I’m trying to find a place to rent for us. I’ve been making phone calls all day long,” I answer her distractedly.

“You could have let me know and I would have helped,” she says, taking a seat right next to me at the table.

“Thank you, sis. You need to focus on school. Did you get it all taken care of?”

“Yeah. I can finish my classes online and then we’ll reevaluate next semester.”

“Well, I was thinking maybe we can get an apartment closer to school. I can find a job there and we’ll start over again. What do you think of that?” I question her, looking up to gauge her reaction.

“It’s not going to happen,” Jae says startling me. “You need to stay here. We’ll see what they say about the house and then start making decisions.”

“We can’t stay here at the compound. I don’t want to be around Lash or the club. Even if they’ve helped us and are now hiding us away. I’ll take my chances with Eric.”

“You’ll risk my life in your quest to get away from here for some reason?”

“I’d never risk your life. You know better than that, Jaelyn.”

“Then don’t leave here because something happened between Lash and you. Don’t even say it didn’t. You’re hurt and not thinking rationally.”

“I am thinking rational. We can’t stay here forever. Lash needs his house back and there is no reason for us to be here. If Eric managed to find out where we are, who the hell is going to help us here? I don’t have anyone’s numbers and you only have Trina’s. If she’s busy, we could be dead before anyone gets here. So, again, why should we stay here?”

“I get your point but there really is no reason for us to head out before thinking things through first. There aren’t any apartments here we can rent?”

“No. Not in our price range. I’d have to dip into our inheritance each month. We both agreed to leave it alone and not touch it unless it was an absolute emergency. Other than using some to get us a place, monthly bills are not a reason for me to touch the money.”

“You’re being stubborn. What about dinner? Let’s get your mind off shit and make dinner for the three of us.”

“The three of us?”

“You know, in case Lash decides to come pay a visit.”

Shaking my head, I know there is no way in hell he’s going to stop by here and spend any time with us. Getting out of my seat at the table, I make my way to the refrigerator to find something we can make for dinner. There really isn’t much we can choose from. Tonight it’s either cheeseburgers, meatloaf, or chicken of some sort. We can make potatoes of some sort once we know what we’re making.

“How about meatloaf tonight. We can make it last longer than anything else. Mashed potatoes and corn on the cob sound good tonight,” Jae says, her voice muffled as her head is shoved in a cupboard looking for something.

“Sounds good to me.”

Jaelyn and I start making dinner without a care in the world. Too bad we didn’t realize things were about to turn for us in a way neither one of us imagined. All because of a jealous woman who can’t see past anything other than what’s in her head and what she wants to see.

Dinner has been made and we’re relaxing in the living room. After dinner and cleaning up the kitchen, I put all of my clothes in the bag I bought to keep everything in so it’s not all over the place. Jaelyn’s already had her stuff packed away since we washed and folded it all up. It will be easier for us to pick up and leave when we need to without having to worry about packing our small amount of belongings before leaving Lash’s home. This is all new for us and it’s hard as hell to wrap my head around considering I’ve always had my belongings where I wanted them and my clothing filling a dresser and closet instead of one duffle bag.

Knowing there was nothing else I could do to ensure Lash’s home is in the same condition as when we walked through the door, Jae and I chose to watch a movie on his massive TV mounted to the wall in the living room. I’ve never seen one so large in someone’s home before. It’s like watching a movie in a theater if we could get the room dark enough. Even the TVs in the bedrooms are larger than what we’re used to. Not that we watch a ton of shows or movies. There’s always something else we need to do and there just isn’t enough time in the day.

I’m lost in thought when the front door slams open hard enough to hit the wall and make Jaelyn and I jump from our seats on the overstuffed, comfortable leather couches. We both have Lash’s blankets covering us as some movie plays on the TV with the volume on low. Turning my head, I find Mona standing just inside with a smirk on her face as she looks around the house.

“Can I help you?” I question, not moving from my seat on the couch as Jaelyn shrinks closer to me.

“Yeah, you can. For starters, you can get out of my man’s house. Skanks like you don’t belong here and I’m moving in,” she states, continuing to look around as she moves further into the house.

“You’re not with him and he’s made sure everyone knows it,” I state, my voice sounding strong.

“That all changed when he found out a few days ago I’m pregnant with his baby. Did you really think he’d stay with your ass? You can’t give him a fraction of what I do and there is no way he’d be satisfied with your virginal, prude ass. Now, get your shit and get the fuck outta here. My man will be home soon, and he doesn’t want either one of you here. Why do you think he hasn’t spent any time with you since having you dropped here?” Mona says, landing a direct hit to my heart.

“Until I hear it from Lash, I’m not going anywhere,” I say, trying to stall for time to figure out what to do.
