“Oh, thanks. That makes me feel better,” he said.

“Listen, I’m asking this as a favor. I can’t trust the rest of the pack. They’ll think I snapped if I’m talking about missing animals and the woods feelingoff.”

He nodded. “Fine. When do we start?”

“How about now?” Zoe asked as she strolled into the kitchen.

Clayton jumped. “Holy shit, how long have you been there waiting?”

She cackled, a laugh she reserved for the sake of freaking the fuck out of people. I rolled my eyes. Go figure my crew is a witch who gets off on scaring people and an eighteen-year-old kid who would be considered small by human standards.

“I just got here. The timing was pure luck,” she said.

Clayton’s face was pale, and he gripped his coffee cup so tight his knuckles were white.

“You sure he can handle working in the woods alone with me?” Zoe asked as she poured herself a cup of coffee.

“I can handle anything you throw at me,” Clayton snapped back.

Zoe lifted her eyebrows in silent question.

Clayton swallowed hard.

“Play nice, you two. This is important and I don’t want the rest of the pack to find out,” I said.

“Well, the rumor mill will be completely overwhelmed in about an hour,” Zoe said.

“She’s coming?” I asked.

“Who’s coming?” Clayton asked.

“You thought I was scary,” Zoe said.

“Zoe,” I warned.

She shrugged.

“Who’s coming?” Clayton repeated.

“Scarlett Meridian,” Zoe said, her smile showing straight, white teeth.

Clayton visibly shivered.

“It’s fine. We invited her and with any luck, we’ll have a new ally soon,” I said.

Zoe set her mug on the counter. “If she doesn’t kill us all to get even for the state of her partner.”

I took a sip of my coffee, ignoring her comment.

“Luke, seriously, you can’t trust her,” she hissed.

“I don’t need to trust her,” I said. “I just need to make it so our enemies align.”

“And who exactly are our enemies?” she asked.

“They found some torn fabric that matched the shirt my dad was wearing,” I said.

“So?”
