“You’re staying a while, I hear,” she continued. “And I take it they didn’t get you to pack a bag before you arrived?”

“Are you kidding? They grabbed me, then drugged me.” I really did need to take that whole thing up with Luke. There needed to be some ground rules now that I was figuring more of this out.

“Well, my dear, you are in the right place.” She turned and started grabbing things from various displays and pulling things down from the wall. Each time, she passed the garment to me and by the time we reached the back of the store, I had a pile of so many clothes in my arms I could hardly see over it.

“What about this? Every girl needs something formal.” Kiki held up a long, slinky red dress.

“I don’t think I’ll have much need for that here,” I said.

“That’s the truth.” She hung the gown back up on the wall with a few others that probably would never sell.

“Dressing room is behind the curtain. Let me know if you need another size or color,” she said.

I’d never even told her my size, so I wasn’t optimistic about anything in the pile. Though, I didn’t need much. I wasn’t sure how long I’d be here, but a couple of pairs of jeans, a few tees, and some clothes to sleep in would be enough. As long as they actually had washing machines in this old west recreation of a town.

Kiki lifted the curtain, and I turned to see if Zoe had anything to add, but she wasn’t next to me. Eyes narrowed, I peered around the store and didn’t see her. Through the small unpainted glass of the upper door to the shop, I caught sight of her outside. She was so close to Luke that I was sure they were speaking in hushed tones.

I bristled, wondering exactly what they were discussing. My life was connected to this male now, and I knew nothing about him. The worst part was that in order to be free of it, my own father had to die. I wanted to feel worse about that than I did, but it was difficult to feel bad for him after all the pain he’d caused.

“Go on,” Kiki urged. “I’ll be right outside if you need me.”

Reluctantly, I ducked inside the tiny dressing room and started trying on clothes.

Luke

All the humanswe’d captured were dead. Every single one of them. There wasn’t an obvious wound and we couldn’t find any signs of anyone entering the building.

“This smells of magic,” Zoe said.

“That’s what I was afraid of,” I agreed.

“You want me to tell Scarlett?” Her upper lip twitched in annoyance.

“You know it can’t come from me.” I hated to do this to her. It was already hard enough on her having Scarlett here at all. And I was the one who made her go get her in the first place. “If there was another way…”

“Fine. But you’re on babysitting duty the rest of the night,” she spat.

“It won’t take that long to talk to Scarlett,” I replied.

“I’m going to Copper Springs after. Told Morgan I’d check in on her friends.”

“Friends?” I was skeptical. “Since when do you do anything nice for anyone else?”

“Her friend is a witch,” Zoe explained.

“You think maybe she did something to hide what she knows?” I’ll admit, I was surprised myself that Zoe couldn’t find anything about the Copper Pack or its alpha in Morgan’s head.

“I’m not sure about that. I think it’s possible Morgan just doesn’t get along with her dad,” Zoe said. “But I do want to see this witch up close.”

“Then you think maybe they do have a pack witch?” I guessed. “The woman who accompanied Billy? You think this is her?”

“I’m not sure that Morgan’s friend is the witch we’re looking for, but she might be able to help us,” Zoe said.

“What if she’s working with them against us?” I asked.

“She might be. I’ll know a lot more when I can sense her power.”
