“They didn’t teach her anything,” Zoe said. “She’s been withholding shifting on purpose. Even before she got here.”

“What?” Luke’s eyes widened. “That’s why you haven’t shifted yet? How long?”

My eyes darted around the room, taking in the expressions of the gathered group. Clayton and Luke looked horrified. Scarlett looked like she wanted to grab a bowl of popcorn and watch the drama unfold.

I glared at Zoe. “Now isn’t the time for this conversation.” How dare she? I’d gone to her in confidence. Okay, so I hadn’t asked hernotto repeat it, but it was implied, wasn’t it?

“Morgan, that’s really dangerous,” Luke said.

“Oh, I get it, now.” I shook my head. It was that stupid bond. “If not shifting has a negative impact on me and I die, you’re going down with me.” I glanced at Zoe. “You could have been honest with me when I asked about the potion.”

“This has nothing to do with that,” Zoe said.

I held up my hand. “Enough. We all know why I’m here and why you’re attempting to be nice to me. I’m only as important as the life I’m tied to. I get it.”

“That’s not true, Morgan,” Luke said.

“Don’t start. You’ve said like ten words to me since I arrived,” I pointed out.

“Whose fault is that?” he demanded. “I was giving you space.”

“Look, my dad isn’t going to cooperate with anything. I mean nothing to him. But if it has a shot of letting me see my best friend and getting me out of here, I’m in,” I said.

“You know that extra magic that alphas have?” Scarlett said.

My brow furrowed, and I turned to her. It seemed an odd comment. “Sure.”

“That magic passes to the strongest offspring, regardless of what’s between their legs,” she said. “Some packs like to leave that detail out. Keeps females from rising through the ranks.”

“No. I was at my dad’s alpha ceremony. My grandfather was there with a priest and they transferred the powers,” I said.

“That’s a nice show, but it’s not what happens. The gods transfer the powers. Or the universe or whatever you want to believe. We don’t know how to control that. Trust me, many have tried, but it doesn’t work that way,” she explained.

“So that means that when my dad steps down…” I didn’t have any siblings, so did that automatically make me the strongest, or was I not even an option since I was a shitty wolf?

“It goes to you no matter what,” Scarlett said.

“That’s what we were trying to explain,” Zoe said. “We think we can trick your dad. Tell him we have a way to transfer his power to someone else.”

“It’s bullshit, but it might let you get close enough to him without him trying to kill you,” Scarlett said.

“What happens if I die? Where does the power go?” I asked.

“His line ends,” she said.

“He was ready to hand it over to another shifter,” I said. “Wanted me to marry the one he chose for alpha. He doesn’t need me.”

“No, he would have let it go, but if he thinks there’s a way to get it back, he might take the bait,” Zoe said.

“Even if he did, what could we get from him?” I asked.

“That’s the beauty of this. We tell him that the more powerful the magic user in the ceremony, the more of the power he’ll get to pass on,” Zoe said.

“You want to flush out whoever he was working with,” I said.

She nodded.

I didn’t like any of it. “How does this help me with the life bond?”
