Or not just from my attacker.

Another wolf had arrived. Larger and faster, the creature attacked with brutal speed. I tried to stand, the urge to run pounding inside me like a warning bell. I didn’t know who this new wolf was or if he was going to harm me once he defeated the other.

Because even in my state, it was plain to see that this new wolf was the superior fighter. He charged the other wolf relentlessly, claws out, teeth bared. He moved with grace and strength, a deadly dance that the other wolf wasn’t able to complete with.

My attacker tried. He snapped his jaws, he swiped his claws, he launched himself at the larger wolf. He was a ball of fury, but his attacks seemed random and desperate.

The larger wolf could end it, I realized. I stumbled and fell back to my knees, unable to get myself moving. A strange sort of peace settled over me, like I knew I was going to be okay.

Maybe this was death. Maybe I was already dead.

My shoulders slumped, and for a moment, I welcomed death’s embrace.

No, stay with me.The words felt like they came from within me and beyond me. As if someone else had said them. There was an intensity, a desperation in those words. It fed me, reminded me that I was worth fighting for.

I forced myself to keep my eyes open. Not like this.I could smell the blood from my wounds. My head felt like it was being crushed in a vise. I knew I was in bad shape, but I wasn’t ready to accept the end. I wanted to survive.

You have to survive.

Again, unsure of where the thoughts were coming from, I leaned into them. Using them to sustain me through the dark thoughts. I didn’t have the strength to move, but I had to hope the new wolf was a friend.

My attacker whined, going down and stilled. The other wolf hesitated, as if unsure if he should make the killing blow. He stepped back, assessing his opponent.

That’s when the smaller wolf rose, and instead of going for his attacker, he came for me.

My eyes widened and then I squeezed them shut, bracing for impact. It didn’t come.

A growl. A yelp. The sounds of ripping flesh and breaking bones.

I opened my eyes to see the smaller wolf at my feet, blood oozing from his neck; his legs in unnatural positions.

The larger wolf’s muzzle was caked in blood. He locked his huge eyes on me. Hazel eyes. Familiar and warm. Safe.

My brow furrowed. “Luke?”

The wolf snorted, as if confirming my question.

I didn’t recall seeing him shift back to human, or what happened to the fallen wolf. Somehow, I was cradled in Luke’s arms and we walked through the door of his house.

ChapterSeventeen

Luke

Morgan was losing toomuch blood. She’d gained and lost consciousness more times than I could count, and every time those gorgeous eyes landed on mine, I felt like I might break.

It didn’t matter that Blake had come for her to get to me. It was the fact that he’d come for her that had me so rattled. I knew we had a traitor in our midst, I just never thought he’d have the guts to do anything other than the bare minimum. I’d underestimated him and it nearly cost Morgan her life.

It nearly cost both of us our lives.

“I need a healer!” I called the second I was inside my house. “Now!”

“What happened?” Zoe appeared at the door, any further questions dying on her lips as she caught sight of Morgan’s mangled body.

“I can help,” Scarlett said.

“Don’t touch her,” Zoe hissed. “Clayton, go get Rosemary. Now.”

Clayton was pale, but he nodded.
