“If you had your shifter healing, it might not have come to that,” he said. “Even if you couldn’t fight him, you would’ve had a chance. Without that gift, you’re practically human. It’s a waste.”

“You can go now,” I said, finally finding the hurt deep within. I hadn’t caused this. I hadn’t asked for this. “Remember, I’m here because of you.”

“I know!” He threw his arms up. “Why do you think I’m going so insane? I have to keep you alive. Not for me, but because this whole thing is due to my mistake. You deserve a life of your own. Not this connected life, trapped to an isolated pack with more secrets than the Pope.”

More secrets? I wanted to press, but he wasn’t done.

“I’m going to fix this for you. I’m going to keep you safe. And I will teach you to protect yourself. But you have to step up to meet that challenge,” he said.

“Okay.”

“You have to let yourself shift, and trust… Wait, did you agree?” He seemed surprised.

“Yeah. I won’t fight my shifting. But you need to promise me something.”

“Anything.”

I sucked in a breath, and flutters surged in my chest at the way he said that word. It was so fast, so all-encompassing, so distracting… Forcing myself to regain my focus, I looked into his eyes. Those now familiar hazel eyes that had found me in his wolf form. The eyes of the male who saved my life, even if it was for his own benefit. “If I go into heat, you lock me away and don’t let anyone near me.”

He startled.

He didn’t know. He didn’t know that was why I refused to shift. “You said Zoe told you everything.”

“She told me you didn’t shift in defiance to your father.”

I felt my face go bright red.

He rubbed the back of his neck again. “But this makes more sense. I get it. I’m sorry I judged. I never thought about what it would be like for a female who doesn’t want a male…”

He was rambling, so I held up my hand. “It’s okay. If you do that for me, I’ll shift.”

“Deal.”

“Knock-knock,” Zoe called. “I have a special delivery for Morgan.”

We both looked toward the door, and I dropped my knees and leaped from the bed. Every inch of my body protested, but I pushed the pain aside as I ran toward Jasmine.

Morgan

Jasmine looked good;safe. After we embraced, she quickly pushed me back to take me in. “You still look terrible.”

“I feel terrible,” I admitted.

Jasmine gently turned my chin and moved my hair so she could see the injury on my head. I winced, but let her inspect me. She frowned, then grunted. “You do know you could have died.”

“According tohim, I did die,” I said.

She raised a brow and looked at Zoe as if seeking confirmation. The witch nodded, and Jasmine shook her head. “You were only gone for a week.”

“Hey, don’t put this on me. I was the one who was kidnapped,” I pointed out.

Jasmine’s brow furrowed, and I knew there was something she wasn’t telling me.

“What is it?” The ache in my head was back full force now that the initial surprise wore off. I rested my palm on my head, trying to ease the pain.

“You need to rest,” she said.
