“Try to rest till Luke returns with that coffee,” Zoe said as she stood.

“I’ll check on you soon,” Jasmine promised.

I settled into the bed, already feeling the urge to sleep again. My body had been taken to the edge of what I could handle, but I was going to overcome this and fight back. No more letting anyone get the better of me. The only way out of this was strength, which meant finally accepting that piece of me I’d kept hidden away.

Inside, I could almost feel my inner wolf standing tall. She was ready to be unleashed.

ChapterTwenty

Morgan

The bruises were nearly goneby the following day, and most of my pain had eased. Some lingering soreness remained, but it was easy enough to ignore. Especially when I was feeling so restless.

While I was still unsure of a lot of what was happening in my life, I’d decided to make the best of where I was now. Learning to defend myself and helping eliminate my father and break the life bond were more of a reason to live than I’d had in the past.

Voices led me to the kitchen, where I found Jasmine and Luke, sweaty and laughing. Jealousy roared, catching me off guard. Swallowing down the uncomfortable sensation, I pushed the feelings far away, not daring to explore their cause. “Good morning.”

Jasmine turned, and her face lit up with a huge smile. “Hey, you’re dressed and up.”

“Yep.” I spread my arms wide. “All better. Well, good enough, anyway.”

“We should have invited you on our run,” Luke said.

Jasmine laughed. “Oh, Morgan doesn’t run.”

“I could run, if I had to,” I admitted. “And after struggling to get away from that asshole who almost killed me, I think I’m going to start.” I walked over to the coffeepot and poured myself a cup before settling in at the table next to Jasmine.

“You? Run?” Jasmine didn’t hide her skepticism.

“Icanrun. I just don’t like to,” I said defensively.

“I can’t wait to see that,” she teased.

I sipped my coffee and gave her a dirty look. She laughed again, then stood. “I’m going to take a shower. Zoe will be here soon.”

Jasmine was staying in another room in Luke’s house, the other closed door in the hallway upstairs. It was nice knowing she was right down the hall from me, just like it had been before.

“You look better,” Luke said.

I set down my cup. “I feel better.”

“I’m sorry, again. I should have seen that coming.”

“I didn’t get the details yet. Who was that?” I asked.

“My former beta.” Luke winced. “I never trusted him, but I didn’t think he’d try to oust me in such a devious way.”

“You can’t trust shifters who want power,” I said.

“That’s true,” he agreed.

“What about you? You enjoy being the alpha?”

“Sure,” he said, unconvincingly.

“Did you want to be alpha?” I pressed.

He considered while he took a sip of his coffee. I took the time to appreciate how his damp shirt clung to all the right places before I caught myself and tore my gaze away.
