She laughed and started to tell me more about her magic and how she channeled and controlled it. “For now, I can only do it with another witch with the same power, but with practice, I can do it with others as well. They say it’s easier if you’re familiar with someone. But it takes trust because I have to go inside their mind.”

“Try it on me,” I insisted.

Her eyes widened, and she put her hand up. “Oh, no. I’m not ready for that yet.”

“Okay. When you’re ready, I totally want to see if we can communicate silently. Think of all the shit I could say about Luke while we’re standing right there next to him.”

“I am so in,” she agreed. “As soon as Zoe thinks I’m ready, you’ll be first I test it with.”

She stood. “Want to grab something to eat?”

I rose from the bed. “As long as the kitchen isn’t too crowded.”

“Something happen between you and Luke? I thought you two were starting to get along,” she said.

Through my open door, I caught sight of Zoe approaching my room. “I’ll tell you later.”

Jasmine lifted an eyebrow in a knowing expression. She didn’t need to use magic to know what I was going to tell her.

“Hey, we think we found someone else who was helping Blake. Can I borrow Jasmine?” Zoe asked.

My stomach tightened, and my pulse raced. I hadn’t thought about Blake and my attack as often in the last few days. Training had kept my focus occupied elsewhere. “Did something happen?”

“Not yet, but we think they were going to attack you during the full moon,” Zoe said. “I could use another witch to help with the interrogation.”

“Of course,” Jasmine said.

“I’m coming with you.”

Zoe looked like she wanted to object, but then she nodded. “Luke’s waiting in the truck.”

“Wait,” Jasmine froze in my doorway. “I have one more thing I have to tell you.”

“What’s that?” I asked.

“I swear to you, I’ve never used my powers against you,” she began.

“Okay,” I replied.

“But I might have gone into your dad’s head when he found me outside your wards. I was desperate. I convinced him I was harmless and that I needed a safe place to be stashed and then left alone,” she admitted.

I tried to keep a serious expression on my face so I didn’t look like I was making light of her confession, but the smile exploded through the facade. “You used your magic on my dad?”

“I’m so sorry.”

I burst out laughing. “I always wondered how you pulled it off. Too bad you didn’t slip up and go too far.” The dark thought caught me off guard, but it was the truth.

“If she had, neither of you would be here,” Zoe said.

That stopped my laugher. She was right. I’d be stuck in Copper Springs under a different alpha and who knows what would have become of me. Would the alpha who took over have forced me to his side due to the alpha power I’d have inherited? The thought sent a shiver down my spine.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,” Jasmine said.

“You have nothing to apologize for. You have to do what you need to survive.” I was oddly grateful for the turn of events that had led me here.

“On that note, we have a traitor to deal with.” Zoe swept her arm aside. “Shall we go pay him a visit?”
