Zoe and Jasmineclimbed into the back seat of Luke’s truck and I climbed into the waiting passenger seat.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he asked.

“I’m going with you,” I snapped.

“No, you’re not. I can’t risk something happening to you,” he said.

“You mean you can’t risk something happening toyou.” I hated the fact that I was pissed at him, but still found him attractive. It was going to take me some time to detox from him. I could fake it until it felt real.

“That’s not what I mean,” he said.

“If someone kills you, I’m dead anyway, so what’s the problem?” I asked.

“We’re wasting time,” Zoe said.

Luke grunted but put the car in reverse. “You aren’t ready for this.”

“I can handle myself,” I said.

“No, you can’t,” he said.

“Then you must be a shitty teacher, because that’s what you’re supposed to be helping me with,” I replied.

The car was silent, and I knew Zoe and Jasmine were hanging on every word. The truck was on the main road now and we’d be in town in a couple of minutes, but the drive ahead felt like an eternity.

“Just be careful,” Luke said, finally breaking the silence as we pulled in front of an ancient looking stone building. “Otherwise, I can’t teach you fighting next week like I planned.”

“That’s all I’m asking for. Once we’re done with this life bond thing, and you get what you need from my dad, I’ll be out of your life.” Even as I said the words, they hurt. They shouldn’t. He was some random male I hardly knew.

The fact that I cared at all told me everything I needed to know. As soon as I could, I needed to get as far away from him as possible.

We exited the car and I could feel the uncomfortable tension from Zoe and Jasmine. Neither of them had said a word during the short drive, but I knew they both had thoughts. It was probably killing them to stay quiet. I also knew Jasmine would be sharing all those thoughts with me later.

“I can go in with Jasmine and question him,” Zoe offered. “Once we get a confession or any other contacts, you can do what you need to do.”

“What do you need to do?” I asked Luke.

“That depends on if he’s guilty,” Luke said.

“Trying to kill the alpha would be treason,” Zoe explained. “There’s only one punishment for that.”

I didn’t need to ask what that punishment was.

The stone building had creaky wood floors and smelled like sawdust and smoke. The main floor was a large empty space that might have once been a waiting room. A long counter took up the back and two large shifters stood at attention when our group entered.

I recognized both of them from the group that had grabbed me from my bar. “Nice to see you again.”

The one on the right cleared his throat and avoided eye contact. The other inclined his head but didn’t speak.

“Friends of yours?” Jasmine asked.

“Part of the kidnapping crew,” I explained.

Both male’s faces flushed.

“Nobody else has come in, right?” Luke asked.
