“Just that witch,” one of the shifters said.

“Scarlett’s here?” Zoe asked. “Why is she here?”

“Let’s find out.” Luke walked past the desk, and our group followed through an unassuming door.

We walked down a flight of stone steps until we ended up in what was clearly a dungeon. I had to blink a few times at the sight. We had a jail in Copper Springs, but it was a fairly new building and mostly consisted of rooms with closing doors that locked. Not literal bars and stone floors and dripping water coming from somewhere in the damp, dim space.

“This is… cozy,” Jasmine said.

“You have a dungeon.” I was still a little stunned. “Please tell me you use giant keys on a ring like in a pirate movie.”

Something jingled, and I looked over to see Zoe holding up a ring of keys. I stifled a laugh.

“I should have insisted on leaving you behind harder,” Luke said.

I pressed my lips together. This was a serious situation, and I was making light. “Sorry.”

Scarlett emerged from a cell at the end of the hall. “I was wondering when the rest of you would arrive.”

“I thought I sent you to do something else,” Luke said.

“Oh, I got what we needed for that so I thought I’d help out here. That witch who arrived with Billy Cordova? Found her, but I wasn’t first. Someone beat me. She’s dead.”

“Dammit,” Zoe said. “I’m guessing this means we don’t have another lead.”

“We’ll figure something out,” Scarlett said. “There had to be more magic at work to get through those wards when she arrived. I don’t think she even had the power to do that. She truly was set up as a decoy.”

“And when her purpose was served, they took her out.” Zoe shook her head.

“She was in bad shape. Looked like all the moisture had been sucked from her body,” Scarlett said.

I tensed. “I’ve heard of that before.”

Zoe looked at me. “That alpha you told me about, right?”

I nodded. “Blue River Pack.”

Scarlett lifted a brow. “I guess I have a lead after all. We don’t have one here. He’s gone.”

“Dammit, Scarlett, you can’t just go around killing people,” Luke said. “We needed that information from him.”

“You promised I could kill whoever was responsible for Mark’s death, but sadly he was spelled just like Mark. As soon as I tapped into his mind, it triggered the spell and he died,” she explained.

“Who is Mark?” I asked, but they weren’t listening to me. This was something different from the things I was involved with.

“Wait, Landon Jones killed Mark?” Zoe sounded skeptical.

“Landon?” Luke’s brow furrowed. “He’s not the type.”

“Someone got inside his head and was pulling the strings, but I didn’t get anything out of him before that spell took him out,” she said. “I’m not sure what he did.”

Luke ran a hand through his hair. He looked frustrated and overwhelmed and maybe even a little sad. “I didn’t think that was possible for shifters.”

“I guess it is,” Scarlett said.

“The same kind of magic we saw before?” Zoe asked.

Scarlett nodded.
