“Show me.” Zoe turned to Jasmine. “You should come feel this. It’s different than anything you’ve ever felt. If you feel this signature, you let us know and you run.”

The three witches walked away, and I hung back, not really wanting to see the body of a dead shifter I didn’t know. “Sorry about Landon.”

“He was a good guy. Not a fighter. I don’t know how he got mixed up in this,” he said.

“What happened to the humans?” I asked.

He sighed. “I guess you’re in too deep now. You might as well know. We found a group of humans we thought were lost hikers in the woods, but their brains were addled. They were a mess. Then, the magic that had been used on them killed them. As if they had a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off. I didn’t think we’d see it again.”

“I didn’t know witches were capable of such things,” I said.

“I’m honestly not even sure what kind of magic it was, but it’s dark and Scarlett and Zoe don’t know how to deal with it.”

“Do you think they got to others in your pack?” I asked. “Maybe when your wards were down when my dad came in.”

“I think you’re right. I wondered if it was an ambush, but we never saw any attacks. It wasn’t down long, but it might have been long enough for someone to sneak in or to cast this kind of magic,” he said.

“We should meet with my dad soon,” I said. “If there are more shifters just walking around with this kind of spell, someone needs to help them. If my dad can lead us to the culprit, we need to try it.”

He nodded. “I think you’re right. I don’t think we can put it off much longer.”

The witches walked back, and I could tell from Jasmine’s expression that she’d seen more than she cared to see.

“Scarlett, do you think he’s ready to take the bait?” Luke asked.

“You want me to set the plans in motion?” she asked. “I thought you wanted to wait a few more weeks.”

“I don’t think we can wait.”

“There’s a full moon tomorrow,” Zoe pointed out. “We shouldn’t do anything until that passes.”

“Good point,” Scarlett said. “We don’t know what kind of magic we’re working with, but many magics are strengthened by the full moon. Meeting on that day wouldn’t be ideal.”

“Okay, then as soon as you think it’s clear, we act,” Luke said.

My stomach tightened in anticipation. We were really doing this. I was going to see my dad and hope he didn’t kill me.

ChapterTwenty-Four

Morgan

Jasmine,Scarlett, and Zoe had left hours ago. Something about recharging crystals and harvesting potion ingredients under the full moon. I didn’t know much about how witches usually embraced a full moon, but Jasmine had been thrilled at the invitation.

She was thriving here. Between the training and the ability to speak openly about magic, she seemed to have woken a part of her that had been long dormant. I was starting to feel the same way as I gained more connection with my wolf.

This place had been good to both of us. With the exception of whatever the fuck was going on between myself and Luke.

He’d been distant and moody, keeping all conversations limited. I’d laid it all bare, pun intended, in the woods and he’d been into it. Until he wasn’t.

Why were males so fucking complicated?

I finished buttoning up the flannel shirt I’d pulled on over a fitted tank top. No bra or underwear tonight, since the clothes would just come off as soon as the moon rose. I was nervous to shift around Luke’s pack, but I was glad it wouldn’t be just the two of us.

“You ready to go?” Luke called from the hallway, not bothering to knock.

I opened my bedroom door and found him waiting near the stairs. He was wearing one of his signature tight tees that showed every curve of his muscular upper body. His jeans hugged his ass in a way that should be illegal. I felt downright frumpy in my comfy clothes, but it wasn’t like they were going to stay on long anyway. I would rather have warmth and comfort over trying to impress anyone.

“We can walk to the meeting place,” he said.
