She laughed. “You should have seen him trying to use the espresso machine.”

Imagining him in an apron with steam rising around him made me laugh. “Maybe he should just level up his drip coffee game.”

“He asked me to order some caramel syrup for him to keep at home. Based on your order, I’m guessing that’s for you?” She gave me a knowing look that made my cheeks heat.

“I’m not sure that’ll help his coffee much,” I said.

“I know you’re not taking about my coffee,” Luke said.

Patricia’s eyes widened, and she excused herself.

“You learned how to make caramel lattes?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Shifting will start soon. We usually end up in town for drinks after.”

“Okay.” I hated that disappointment washed over me when I realized he wasn’t planning to stay with me.

“I thought you should know in case we get separated,” he said.

Fuck. All the feelings. He was planning to stay with me. I was in big trouble. I should be distancing myself emotionally. This whole thing was doomed from the beginning, but I couldn’t shake him. Maybe I didn’t want to.

Luke’s brow furrowed, and he took a step closer to me. I tensed. “What?”

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a few shifters approach from all sides, closing in on us. “What’s going on?”

“You don’t feel it yet?”

“Feel what?”

“I gotta get you out of here,” he grabbed my hand and tugged me away, several of the shifters following behind. He turned and growled, a possessive warning that made the hair on my arms stand up. The other shifters backed off, retreating to the woods.

Then I felt it.

Tingling low in my belly, desire curling through me… I clenched my hands into fists. “Get me out of here.”

Hand in hand, we retraced our steps, back toward Luke’s house. By the time we arrived, I was panting and my thoughts were foggy. I’d been fighting it, resisting the urge to surrender, but as soon as he closed the door, I turned on him and grabbed a fistful of his tee.

“Don’t make me go through this alone.” I didn’t recognize the husky tones of my voice. “You already know I want you. You want me.” I lowered my hands and started working the button on his jeans.

He caught my wrist. “No.”

I smirked. “You want this as much as I do.”

“You’re not yourself,” he said.

“Fuck being good. I want you to do bad things to me. I want this.Please.” My insides were molten, my desire a frenzy of need and want. Tugging my arm away from his grasp, I went after his button again.

He grabbed me and threw me over his shoulder with a grunt. I gasped, then giggled. “Finally. Your room, my room, the couch, I don’t care.”

We arrived at my room and tossed me on the bed. I pulled my shirt off and unclasped my bra. “It’s my turn to pay you back for the other day.”

He gritted his teeth and kept his distance.

“Stop playing with me and get naked,” I ordered.

He smirked. “You are demanding when you’re in heat.” Then he turned and walked to the door.

I launched off the bed and raced after him, but he closed the door before I could reach it. I grabbed the door handle and pulled, desperate to get to him. “Let me out. Get back here and fuck me, you coward.”
