“It’s not easy,” I agreed. “Why don’t we take a break?”

We headed to the kitchen, and I got each of us a glass of water. “You’ve done well, your shifting is much better and with practice, I think you could learn to defend yourself.”

“Not anytime soon,” she said. “It’s going to take more than one lesson.”

“True. But I’m happy to keep helping you,” I offered.

“Maybe I’ll come back here after the whole thing with my dad,” she suggested. “It’s not like I have much to go back to there. If you’re successful in taking him out, it’s not like I’m going to be welcomed back with open arms.”

“You’re always welcome here.” I really, really hoped all this worked out. There was a part of me that wanted to call the whole thing off, but this was bigger than us. The discovery of that portal and the fact that someone in town had that level of magic used against them showed me how dangerous this was. I couldn’t let my feelings get in the way of preventing more destruction.

Morgan was smart and tough. If anyone had a shot of coming out of this alive, it was her.

“Hey, you in here?” Zoe’s voice called. She entered the kitchen with Jasmine and Scarlett in tow. “I have good news. He’s agreed to meet.”

“Did he agree to bring some magic of his own?” I asked.

“I told him we’d provide a powerful witch to work the spell, but he said he didn’t trust ours,” Zoe said with a grin.

“He fell right into it.” It was exactly what we hoped for.

“You sure you want to try this, Morgan?” Jasmine asked. “What if he’s faking to get close to you?”

“It’s the only way to put a stop to this,” Morgan said. “He was willing to kill me to get what he wanted and whoever he’s working with is even more dangerous.”

“When does he want to meet?” I asked.

“Tomorrow,” Scarlett said.

My chest constricted. “That soon?”

“Copper Springs, sunrise,” Jasmine said. “I don’t like it.”

“We don’t have another choice,” Morgan said.

She was right, this was our best shot, but she didn’t know exactly what we were dealing with. I locked eyes with Zoe, and she seemed to silently remind me to keep my mouth shut.

Would it change anything if Morgan knew what we suspected about her dad? If she knew it might have been a demon giving the commands instead of him, would she let us try to kill him? Or would she want to protect him? We needed to find out if there was a demon and we needed this shot at destroying it if there was. I couldn’t tell Morgan. Not if there was a chance she’d ask me to hold back. Because there was too much of a chance that if she asked me to spare her father, I would.

“Everyone should rest up,” Zoe said. “It’s going to be a big day tomorrow.”

ChapterTwenty-Six

Morgan

In the timeI’d been with the Lost Pack, I’d occasionally wondered or even worried about my dad, but I hadn’t missed him. And I sure as hell wasn’t in any hurry to see him again.

But this was our chance to break this life bond, and get him out of my life forever. Part of me struggled with the fact that I was setting him up so the others could take him out, but I had to remind myself that it was exactly what he planned for me.

It was still dark when someone gently knocked on my door, but I’d been up most of the night, stomach twisting with dread in anticipation. The only expectation from me was to walk up to the meeting and pretend I was going along with this transfer of power. If he tried to hurt me, I was to run. Shift if I could, and get away as fast as possible.

I felt useless about my part. Nobody felt good about being the bait. Especially when I couldn’t stand up for myself against him.

“You awake?” Luke asked gently.

“I’m already dressed,” I said.

He entered the room and stood just past the threshold. Even in the dark, I could make out all his features as if they were burned into my memory. He’d said I was welcome here once this was done, but was that what I wanted? Was that what he wanted? What would change once we broke the bond between us?
