Sleepingon the Job

“I’m Kaitlyn Jacobs, file clerk. You can call me Kait if you want,” I said. “What part of the firm are you with?”

I’d learned enough to know most functions in the firm were divided into divisions specializing in particular areas of law.

“Just made junior partner in real estate,” he said, gesturing to the files surrounding us. “It’s why I’m down here. I told my clerk to go home an hour ago. We’ve got some depositions to take care of in the morning, and he’s going to have to be on top of things for me.”

“That sounds… interesting.”

I had no idea what he was talking about.

“Not in real estate it’s not,” he said. “At least, not in this case. Tenant claiming that the landlord did shitty repairs on the unit, landlord saying he did things right, we’re deposing the contractor the landlord hired. Trust me, it’s going to be hours of going ‘so you bought the wiringwhere?’ and minutia like that. You know, basic check the box type stuff. I’m going to need ten cups of coffee by the end of it all.”

“That much caffeine could mess with your heart, not to mention your stomach.”

Shit. Why had I said that? The man hadn’t asked me for nutritional information about coffee. If he wanted to burn out his insides, it was no business of mine.

“My stomach’s made of iron,” he said, patting it.

And I had to say, he certainly looked like he had washboard abs under his light blue dress shirt. Wouldn’t have minded running my hands over to see whether my eyes were deceiving me or not.

For a moment, I wondered if he was flirting with me. But of course, he wasn’t. He was just being nice to the new girl. His attention did not mean that he was interested in me. I mean shit, he most likely had a supermodel girlfriend waiting for him at home, with that face of his that would make women drop to their knees.

“Okay then,” I said, clearing my throat before my overly horned up hormones betrayed me. “I’ve only got a little bit left to do, so I’ll be quick.”

“Well don’t overwork yourself on your first day, okay,” he said.

“I know, but—”

“I know you heard during your orientation that misfiling and losing paperwork is a cardinal sin. And you want to do your best,” he said, nodding. “I get it. Why do you thinkI’mhere at this hour? But, don’t burn yourself out, is what I’m trying to say. Have a good night.”

“You too, Mr. Stevens.”

He pulled a binder from the shelf and left. I went back to my desk, where my head was positively spinning. And my eyelids were heavy. Very heavy.

Next morning, a visitor stopped by my desk. “Kait, would you come to my office?”

I pushed myself up from my desk and followed Mr. Parker to his office, where he closed the door behind us.

“Mr. Parker, what can I do for you?” I asked.

“I’m sorry, Kait, but I’m going to have to file a complaint against you.”

My stomach flipped, and I looked around for a trash can in case I got sick. A complaint? Against me? What the hell could I have done wrong? I’d only just started. I couldn’t lose this job. I just couldn’t.

“Wh… what happened? I’ve been working really hard—”

But he cut me off, stepping closer and brushing a lock of hair back behind my ear. “For having jet black hair that haunts my dreams,” he said. “For having dark eyes that leave me so distracted I keep messing up my work. You cost me the trial.”

Okay, what the fucking fuck?

“Um, Mr. Parker… I didn’t mean to do anything of the sort,” I whispered back. “Truly.”

“And now I have to get these naughty thoughts out of my mind. By trying the real thing,” he said, taking a step closer.

Before I could protest, not that I really wanted to anyway, he lowered his lips to mine, when another voice interrupted.

“You think you’re the only one who’s distracted?”
