“Kaitlyn?”

I looked up with a gasp, realizing there was drool on my chin, blinking hard to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. “Wha… what? What happened?” I murmured, looking around the room.

I looked up to find Mr. Stevens standing over me, his eyes narrowed. His tie was off, and his shirt was unbuttoned at the neck. Guess he was pulling his own late nighter. But he clearly wasn’t happy about mine.

Shit, shit, shit.

This was it. The end. I tried to stand. Might as well begin gathering my stuff since I was surely about to be ushered out.

But I fell right back into my chair, one of my legs having fallen asleep under me.

Great. Not only had I been caught snoozing, but I also looked like I was drunk off my ass.

Fuck all.

“I checked your time card, Kaitlyn. You’ve been averaging fifteen hours a day since Monday. And I’ll bet you you’re still clocked in right now.”

“I… I…” I started, but he held up his hand.

“As with most jobs, sleeping on the clock is against the rules,” he said, his lips twitching a little.

Wow. I knew I’d fucked up, but was he really going to rake me over the coals?

Dude, just show me to the door and you’ll never have to see my sorry ass again.

Or… was he playing with me?

Hmmm. There was an artificial puff to his chest and just a bit too much sternness to his jaw that didn’t make it all the way to his twinkling eyes.

It didn’t matter, though. I wasn’t in the mood to be fucked with. And if he wanted to play, I could play right back. Then, I’d show myself out, leaving my office keys behind, of course.

I widened my eyes. I don’t know what had come over me, but I was done groveling for men. Just fucking done.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Stevens.”

I made sure to jut my bottom lip out just enough to come across as remorseful, but not enough for the man to think I was mocking the situation.

His lips twitched again, and I knew he was playing.

And I was playing right back. I was too goddamn tired and pissed at the world not to play back.

“Mr. Stevens, I didn’t mean to fall asleep on the job. Really.”

“What did I tell you on Monday, Kaitie?” he said, tilting his head when I recoiled at the diminutive name. “What. What’s wrong?”

“My… ex. He called me Kaitie. I hate it.”

His eyes immediately registered my problem, confirming he was listening. “Well then, Kaitlyn, let me remind you that on Monday I told you to get out of here. That the work was never going to be done. Did you know the firm doesn’t get to bill clients for your work? It’s considered overhead and is absorbed by the firm.”

Um, okay.

“I get it, Mr. Stevens. So do you prefer that the work just not get done? Like, ever?”

His head snapped back at my insolence, and if I wasn’t mistaken, his jaw twitched once or twice.

Had I gone too far?

“Kaitlyn, I think a review of our rules is just not sinking in for you. I’ll have to find other ways to encourage you to obey them.”
