His eyes flashed surprise.

Wow. She did have it in her to confess. The words slipped out before she could stop herself. By the happy shock in his eyes, she wasn’t sorry about it.

Take a leap of faith.

She couldn’t. Could she?

“Okay, so maybe I do pretend about some things. You have my heart, Jaxson. You have for a long time. But I’m scared. I can’t lose you.”

“You won’t. I swear,” he said with such ferocity, she wanted to believe every word.

“And if I do?”

He looked pained for a brief second, then he smiled. “You won’t. I refuse to let it happen.”

She giggled, adoring him for getting her to laugh when it wasn’t amusing. “You’re making it hard to resist you.”

“Good. Don’t resist me.” He molded her body perfectly with his. “Marry me. Take a huge leap of faith. Let me show you how much I love you. Let me make up for all the lost time we could’ve had together already.”

“Marry…” Her jaw dropped, yet she knew he wasn’t joking by the intensity in his gaze.

For the first time since he had walked inside and bombarded her with so many erratic emotions, she felt a weird sense of peace. As if she were walking toward the edge of a cliff. To look upon the beauty before her. To see the horizon and the amazing possibilities that could be in her reach. As if it was time for her to make a decision.

To jump off that cliff and see what would happen. Or to run in the opposite direction knowing nothing would change.

What would happen if she jumped?

Would she fall to her death?

Would she land on a safety net?

Would he catch her?

With his delicious, handsome smile, the secure way he held her in his arms, she had a feeling the most wondrous thing would happen.

She’d actually be happy for once.

“Okay.”

“Look, just think about—” He stopped speaking, his brows turned inward as if repeating her simple word back in his head. “Okay? You’re not disagreeing?”

A bright smile lit up her face. More peace filtered into her heart, filling that hole she never thought she’d fill again. “I love you, too, Jaxson. I can’t say I won’t have moments of panic, but I’m willing to take a leap of faith. With you.”

Hell, she was already panicking. What was she doing? This would never work out. She’d lose him.

“I never thought I’d hear those words. We need to go shopping. Right now.”

He kissed her soundly on the lips as he twirled her around in an excited circle.

“Shopping? What an odd thing to say,” she said with a chuckle as he set her back down on two feet.

“Well, you need a new sketch pad. You have some drawing to do. One dress for Gabby. And one dress for you. My beautiful, beautiful bride.”

Oh, those words sounded perfect on his lips.

With every encouraging word from him, her fear ebbed away little by little. It would take a while for it to completely disappear, but maybe…just maybe, it would finally vanish and she could live a happy, carefree life. With Jaxson by her side.

How odd she had a craving for a candy bar when she had a full bag of her white chocolate-covered pretzels. Those were usually enough for her.
